It would be helpful to know which version of IE you are using, which version of Windows your are using, and what anti-malware software you might be using.

Are you getting an alert to the high CPU usage, or are you directly monitoring it?

I am using Explorer 8 with XP and AVG protection. Doing both, monitoring and getting alarms.

What do the alerts actually say? What program is providing the alerts?

The first thing I would do is turn off AVG and see what the usage is. (I would prefer to set it not to run on startup and reboot the computer.)

I've run into the same thing with IE9, even with all add ons disabled. I finally just gave up and use FireFox exclusively. I'll be watching this thread just the same.

It's been my experience with computers that when any application starts hogging CPU time AND you are not actively using it in some way, that application has fallen into some sort of infinite loop and essentially crashed without actually quitting. When they do that, a forced quit is in order.

Being a Mac guy, I don't know how to do that on a Windows machine, although I know it can be done.

Before everyone panics, how much real memory is installed. What programs are on the right side of the taskbar? Even though I don't like to use it, what does MSConfig show as starting up when you boot? Last, how much free space do you have on your hard drive?
Not enough real memory can mean that virtual memory swapping is going on creating more CPU usage.
The same with not enough free space on the drive.
Too many unnecessary programs starting up at boot time also take up cycles that reduce what is available for other programs to use.
Last, do you reboot daily or so? You could have an issue with memory not being freed up by programs not in use. Programs on XP were not the best at releasing memory. This can be a cause of paging again.

My IE8 doesn't hog memory, doesn't run constantly.

I wonder if your AVG is set to monitor every single thing it possibly can. That will take up a lot of CPU time & resources.

Something else going on here. Not solely the fault of IE8.
