We traded a 08 Dodge 3/4 ton Cummins to a 2012, 1 ton Chevy extended cab single rear wheel long bed 2 wheel drive. The issue is the bed rail clearance. The GM sit much higher and we estimate that the clearance went from 6-7" down to 2". Our 5th wheel is a 27 1/2 Jayco. We have not installed the old hitch yet, we just placed in the bed and lined the trailer pin to it(very carefully) to get an idea. It is obvious there's a problem. What is the best solution? (please don't say "get with the dealer and get your old truck back).

I have a trailer saver hitch and added 3" to it. Solved the problem. I know some hitch's can be raised. Can yours? Why must the truck maker continue to raise the truck. Makes it harder for us old farts to get into and it was not very pleasing to have to deal with getting the necessary clearance for the bed rails. Not only did they raise the truck with larger tiers but made the box deeper. And soon somebody is going to write in and say FILP the AXLES. Your springs are probably on the top of the axle now.

Did you try putting the weight of the pin on the hitch? The back end of the truck might drop 2 or 3 inches to give you the clearance that you want.
Just a suggestion of something to try.

From my experience with my 3/4 ton, I don't think a 27.5' Jayco will squat the 1 ton much at all. A little, sure, but not much.

I hear your pain. Just bought a new F-350. I wanted a Dodge 3500 or GM but the ford was 54" to the top of the box and GM & Dodge were 59-60" Raising my trailer (at the axles so it would ride level) was almost $3000. It made sense to get the Ford.

Thank you everyone for your input. So far raising the hitch would be great if we could go higher. Now we will have to go shopping for another hitch. Hopefully they make one that will do the trick. As far as making the box deeper and the truck higher, we think it is a ploy to get us to buy "newer and bigger RV's" the bigger they are the higher they sit and again the more they cost.

Before you buy a new hitch, make sure yor RV will be close to level with a taller hitch. You don't want it to be too high in the front.

Look into doing an "axle flip" (moving the springs to the top of the axles). If you aren't the DIY type you should be able to get a trailer shop to do it for $300 or so.
