we just got home from the Oregon Coast. as usual it was a great visit, BUT the trip from Portland to Lincoln City was a PITA. the roads were bumper to bumper. I think we made 200 yards per hour all the way. Every one and his dog went to the Coast Friday. I don't know how the people in big cities can live with all that traffic. They have to be crazy. four lanes of road and nobody is satisfied with the lane they are in. some cross three lanes of travel to get behind some one that is going 2 miles per hour faster than they were going, just to come to a stop. Then we came to a stand still, we were two lanes of travel and it narrowed down to one and bottled necked in a town called dundee Oregon. As I remember the town wanted the hyway to go through their town for economical reasons, now nobody stops because they are afraid they will never get back into the line of traffic. And get this. they have a city cop who had his radar gun going and we were hauling down the road at about 200 yards an hour. I live in a small town. our idea of a traffic jam is the stop sign at the end of main street. I can see why some people ride bikes to work or the store. it's faster. It has been about 5 years since we have been to the Coast and I think it will be another 5 before we go again. next time I think we will drive down in the middle of the night.

Lived on the coast in Lincoln City in 1972 - not much has changed with the roads. Part of the fun I guess.

I have to assume you don't live in the Portland area? Can't sell the house so we are stuck for a while longer. But being retired we don't have to fight the traffic any longer except for doctors visits. House sells and we are gone from this side of the state to someplace more scerene and conservative.

Yip -- those highways to the coast on a Friday afternoon are a killer! And if you're going from Salem toward the coast -- you find that a lot of them stop off at the casino!!! Best bet -- NEVER EVER EVER go to the coast on a Friday afternoon ---- I lived in Salem from '72 to '05 --- I'd leave on Thursday or not at all!!! Don't give up on the Oregon coast!!!! Just plan differently --- oh -- and going AFTER Labor Day is the best time.

We lived in a small WA coastal town in the 70's. We used to head to Seattle on an occasional weekend to get away from all the traffic back-ups. We'd be one of two cars heading away from the beach on Friday afternoon, while they were bumper to bumper lined up on the 24 mile stretch. Reverse on the way home on Sunday.

Don't know your situation but if you leave Portland around 9:30am on Fridays you will avoid most of the traffic. We head down there several times during the summer and fall. In fact we went down Friday also. Left Vancouver at 9am. and beat the rush.

We went from Lincoln City to Portland in early July of this year on a Thursday. Road was good until past Mcminville and then as you stated it took us approximately 3/4 of an hour to get through the Dundee and surrounding areas on that road. After that it was a breeze all of the way into Portland. This was not a surprise to me as I assumed that the roads would be quite busy as we were the day after the 4th of July and a day before the start of the Portland Jazz festival.
Gladly this short traffic bungle up did not detract from the great holiday that we had.

Fortunatly we live in Keizer and it's a pretty easy trip to Lincoln City. I do however hate the drive down the coast. The road is a mess with so much traffic. I'ts a beautifull drive though, but the road is in need of major repair.

take 22 / 18 through salem helps cut the commute bypassing both dundee and mcminneville.you have to remember these roads were built when portland was really a "puddletown"
