I would rather have a transfer panel like this one, and it can transfer up to 7,500 watts. It has a amp meter built in, and you can monitor the wattage being used at any time.

Wires from the generator and the main panel are connected to the panel, then you can transfer them one at a time from the main panel to the generator as needed. To exercise the generator, you might want to start the generator and then switch over the refrigerator or another load that will put a load on the generator.
