A dear friend of mine has a 98 Fleetwood. When they arrived at a church to speak they told them they had a 30amp service that they could plug into. It turned out to be 30amp at 220volts. Well it smoked their inverter. I am looking for someone that may have a used but good inverter that they are looking to sell or maybe donate to their ministry so they can continue their work. You can check out her website at www.lindalanier.org . They had a 2000 watt inverter. you can pm me if you have one or have any questions.

Inverter or Converter?? The inverter takes your 12V DC source and "inverts" it to 120V AC, so that you can run household type appliances off your batteries and not have to run your generator or be hooked up to "shore-power".

The converter will take a 120V AC source (usually 30 or 50 amp shore-power), and convert it to 12V DC, so that your house lights and other 12V accessories will operate.

If he plugged into a 30A 220V AC circuit, it most likely fried his converter, but there are fuses on most converters that would protect batteries and switches on down the line.

I have a 1000 watt invertor that they can have,it's new and has been rolling around in my truck for 3~4 years. A 1500 watt will run a microwave, toaster and coffee maker one at a time for about $125. I use that setup in a class 8 truck and have for several years.

I have a xantrex charger/inverter 2000 watt .I believe it is a freedome 458. I put 220 volts into once when I lost my neutral connection at the plug. This took out a very small fuse ( .25 amp) I think that was inside the charger. I thought I had at first burned up my charger because it was dead. You might get your friend to see if there is a service manual he can download about his charger. He may be as lucky as I was and he can just replace this little fuse. Of course I had to remove the inverter from the camper to be able to get to the fuse which was a pain but my time is a lot cheaper than buying a new charger. good luck

Another person who done the same thing hooking up to a 220V line(anonymous)repaired it the same way!
I replaced the small fuse and everything worked ok!

I just replaced my Zantrex inverter for a new Magnum true sine wave. I got it at Inverter Service Center, White House TN, Ph# (615) 285-0611. They sell Zantrex and Magnum. I have already sold my old one but they told me they usually have used ones available.

Great advice in the thread. I firmly believe that if manufacturers would get bold enough to put 220v failsafe shutoffs to protect the converters they would go out of business. I've lost 2 converters to this, both by other people plugging in my RV to a dryer outlet.

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

How do you get a 30 amp, 120v plug into a 30 amp 240 volt outlet? They don't fit.
Why isn't the church that caused this problem buying him a new inverter or converter, which ever was damaged. You would think it the least they could do.

After having mine back to the local factory rep for repair 3 times I just did away with it---it was a 2000 watt Zantrex. Only thing I lost in by passing it was the house battery charger which I now charge with either the chassis alternator or with a remote battery charger when parked. In my opinion those things are more trouble than they are worth---I haven't missed it in 2 years.
