I plan to go to a campground outside the city in early September. Take a train into the city to see the sights. My wife is a little concerned about safety. Any tips about safety while in
New York City. etc.? Also what tour company do you recommend? We get off the train at Grand Central Station. PS just me and my wife

Dress down. Don' t wear jewelry. Stay in tourist areas. Wallet in front pocket. Purse over shoulder and clutched. Skip the tour operator. Get a transit pass. Everything is accessible from ssubway and buses.

Made the trip two years ago but left the coach at home and took a midnight Chinese bus for $40 round trip. Probably the most dangerous part of the trip.
Purchased New York City Passes and day trip tickets on the subway and did a self guide tour. Loved it. Ended our day at the top of the Empire State Building after sun set. No problem in Manhattan or on the subway. Ate street vender hotdogs and giant pretzels. Stop by Ground Zero. Not the same as seeing it on TV as actually being there. Emotional place.

I live just outside the city and Boonedocks advice is very solid.

we too were apprehensive but we met the nicest, most helpful people in the city and on the subways and trains. No need to worry unless you want to prowl the back alleys late at night. It's great and we hope to return.

NYC is safer than Orlando. Google the free and cheap museum list.

Make sure that you pre-book your Ground-Zero tickets ahead of time, due to security and availability issues... It was an amazing and moving experience.

We were mildly apprehensive about NYC, but had a great experience, and as everyone else has said, the subways are the best and cheapest way to get around. We chose to stay in the city, and actually found a hotel that was cheaper than our theater tickets.

Don't try to navigate the "Lincoln Tunnel" in a convertible with the top down.... Been there and almost got gassed.... Otherwise we enjoyed the visit....

AS others have said NYC is a safe place. There is nothing to fear. Stay out of back alleys and you will be fine

We did exactly what you are planning. We camped outside the city and took the train in. The first day we took a boat tour around Manhattan on the Circle Line. Other days we got all day passes for the subway. Between that and walking we saw a lot! Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge was one of our highlights.

If you're interested you can check out our pics from that trip here.

We didn't have any fear at all while we were there - everyone was very nice and friendly... Lots of tourists and business folks - everyone eats while walking to get somewhere.

Have fun!
