Since last fall we have had two glow plugs(#1 and #8) changed out in our 2009 Silverado shown in our signature.
The check engine light came on again today and the service rep at our local GM dealership says that glow plug #5 is now suspect. We have less than 31,000 Kms on our vehicle.
Has anyone else had this problem with the 2009 Chevy or is it something unique to us.
Or does anyone have any ideas why this is becoming an almost to regular an occurence?
The glow plugs are being replaced under warranty put we would rather be camping than checking why the check engine light is coming on.
Any ideas?

Glow plugs are suppose to last forever.
The problem arise from excessive heat (are you running tuner? or are you running emissions mod, eg no EGR), or excess voltage / current, or bad controller.

Glow plugs on my 6.2 and 6.5 were always going out, now my daughter drives it so I still am changing glow plugs.
Solution, get a Cummins, no glow plugs.

We are running straight stock. Not sure about excess voltage or current.
It is a question I could ask.

My 09 duramax has had no gp fail. They are cheap and easy to fix off warranty -but still I see your point of why is this happening. My guess would be there was a bad batch of gp and after these few replacements you won't see another issue - but that's only a guess. I had a bad water pump on mine when new - turns out many others did too - replacement is flawless.

'Common-mode failure' means that you still have 5 more glow plugs to replace because they have been through the exact same service as the 3 that have already failed. What sucks is that the dealership hasn't gone ahead and done the other 5 from a customer service standpoint.
The life has been short for your plugs but no cause for concern yet. If you start loosing the new ones in a short time period then I would start digging a little deeper.
They are easy to replace. I've done them on a friend's LBZ and I can't immagine yours to be more difficult.

Gets me wonder why they still use glow plugs? Why not grid heater on top of the intake manifold like Cummins, seems much simpler .

Just wait until a tip falls off and gets stuck in the exhaust valve!

Had one go out on my LBZ at 125Kms. Glow plug was $20.00 from NAPA and took me about 20 mins to change.
I don't know if it's true or not but I read they should be changed sooner rather than later when they fail so you don't have the broken tip problem.
