I love it!! We have a "no texting while driving" law in Pennsylvania. Does law enforcement enforce the law? No! New Jersey has a "no hand-held cell phone while driving" law. Is it enforced? No! The city of Philadelphia has the same law as New Jersey. Is it enforced? No! Why pass laws that will not be enforced? Beats me.

If highway patrols spent all their time ticketing for texting and cell phone use then the public would be up in arms about revenue grabs and such. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I've heard locally that the Highway Patrol is reluctant to issue minor traffic tickets during rush hour as every traffic stop slows traffic. Obviously they will still stop drivers for major violations like drunk driving.

"New Jersey law agencies are writing about 10,000 tickets a month for driving and using handheld cell phones, or for driving and text messaging." according to: This Article

That's AWESOME - and fairly easy to enforce because you've got the "paparazzi" with their devices taking pictures (and driving while distracted) right where police officers are going to be!!

I am very much against outlawing the use of cell phones while driving. I know when it is appropriate and when it is not.
HOWEVER, after all the near-wrecks I've had with folks on the phone while driving, my resolve is breaking.

That is or will be the most honest response.
I believe that laws and technology both are equally responsible for creating a whole generation of drivers that stare at their crotch instead of the road.

Exactly, I totally agree with you! This law, together with most of the others , should only apply to other people!

I had to laugh one day.. There was a short term closure of a freeway while they dragged an overhead cable across the road, Only lasted about 15-20 minutes. I was in the back up waiting to get to the next exit,, Of course many 'We can't wait" types were using the "Authorized vehicle turn around" to flip and go back the other way.
State Police cars lined up 4 deep writing them tickets as they came out of the turn.
Truckers (I monitor 19) were laughing at those stupid 4-wheelers lining up to get ticketed. Fact was.. I did a bit of smiling myself (Still do when I think of it).

This law, together with most of the others , should only apply to other people! My daily commute involves 15 minutes of open highway driving. Almost no other cars, 70+ mph, no problem for making/taking phone calls and READING text messages (we read road signs, why not text?). The other 15 minutes involves city highway and street driving. Speeds range from 0 to 70+ (and sometimes back & forth between those two in rapid succession). I know in those cases, the phone is NOT an appropriate thing to be fooling with. If a phone call or text comes in while I am on that second part of my commute, it doesn't get answered until I either reach the office or get out on the open highway. And even then if the traffic is bad, it won't get answered until I get home.
I see no issues with the way I use my phone while in the car. I don't even use a "hands free" because if you look at the actual studies, they don't help. Heck, when it gets bad, I even turn off the stereo.
Now I do have issues with the way I see others use their phones. It's difficult to write a law that doesn't infringe on the ability of those who know HOW to use an item while protecting ALL of us from those who do not.
As I wrote, I am becoming ambivalent about cell phone laws. I WAS very much against them. Now I am not so sure.
Besides, they won't affect me as there are no police around when I am using my phone.
And if they are around AND pull me over for using my phone, they will likely be the type to give me a ticket for doing 71 in a 70 zone anyway.
