I am not new to RVing or to towing a 5th wheel (35'). I am new to making long trips. We typically travel about 4 hours or less from home and can either make the trip on one tank of fuel or know good places to pull in with plenty of room. We are making a long trip in the next month (NC to FL), will be mostly on interstate 95 and am wondering what do most people do when they need to stop for fuel. I have a diesel truck and am wondering if truck stops are the way to go or are they not really set up for RVs? Any insights or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

even though fuel prices stink, I goto truck stops because there is always enough room to navigate and I fear getting in a situation where I'm stuck.. just me..

Hi,

I use gas buddy to find an appropriate fuel station.

I have found that planning ahead by using StreetView in Google helps a lot. You can see entrance and exit driveways and station layout as if you were actually on the ground in most cases. Not always accurate as some of the street view shots may be a couple of years old.

I'd like to get my hands on the idiot(s)who designed these new stations where the pumps are perpendicular to the road. I guess it's because they can get more pump islands in the same footprint but it's a PITA for anyone towing something.

If time is not a problem, we only drive until the tank gets low. Find a campground, unhook and head to the station with out the trailer. Around 8 hours on the road is plenty for a day. If rushed, start looking for a good in out station at half a tank, lots of them around.

X-2

Just remember to checkout station as you pull in so that you will be facing street when exiting, without have to make turns after fueling.

Wherever you decide to stop the most important thing IS NOT making sure you can get in BUT MAKING SURE YOU CAN GET BACK OUT...if you can't then move on down the road

I never use truck stops as there is always fuel on the ground near the pumps and when you get back in the truck you smell fuel for the next couple of hours. I also feel that if your nervous about getting into or out of a station you are probably pulling larger than what you are capable of handling or need a driving course. So what do you do if you get into narrow city streets or whatever?? If your rig got in there, it will get out you just need to have some training. JMO
