It just can't be done that way! Don't be tempted and fool yourself into thinking that fighting traffic and spending money on fuel isn't important to the overall fun of camping. It's essential!
But if we want to camp with friends we can set up there, and enjoy three campsites, two with ocean front views and one with a spectacular sandy beach within walking distance of our home.
But no, we have never done it yet.

It almost seems goofy to go camping so close to home.
Thoughts?
Do it every month. It's not the distance it's the destination! Nice shady camp sites on a wonderful lake. Why go further?

Why do you think that is goofy? Its like camping in the back yard nothing a matter with that. A person we know blew up his motor and he didn't have the cash on hand to fix, he and his wife camped in backyard during the summer and enjoyied it very much.

My folks camped for years at a state park that was less than 3 miles from their house!!! Never went anywhere else. Not my cup of tea but, hey, they were happy!!!

I'd do it in a second.
I live just a couple of miles from Lk Pleasant Resort in Bothell Wa. and if they were to have a nice pool and other amenities, we would spend many a weekend there. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place to stay but there's no reason for us to stay there.

Go for it. We've taken the family on beach or lake fishing trips near home, more like 45 miles, but in CA distance is usually measured in time, not distance. Beach, 30 min, Lake, 45 min, Disneyland, 45min. If it's fun, go for it.

We've camped really close to home before. It saves on gas and if you forget something it's not a big deal to go back and get it.

If 20 miles gets you away from the city and into a decent camping area, why not. The very best I could do here would be about 50 miles and then only in the winter. My usual minimum is about 120 miles to get in the trees.

This Labor Day weekend we are camping about 8 miles away from where we live. I can't be more excited. I love staying in our TT, and so do our kiddos! I don't think it is goofy at all! Have fun and make some good family memories!
Don't buy green bananas! Do the things you wish you could do, now, don’t wait on them. There just might not be a tomorrow.

We live on acreage with timber and a pond. Been too busy to travel to campgrounds this year, so every other friday at the back of the property we pitch a tent or park the camper, start a camp fire and here come the kids, the neighbors, and it is no different than the parks, other than the cost.
