Driving today with ABS signal came on then went off again when we used the "drake break" going down a hill. Our manual is of no use. The ABS signal is now off. Any thoughts, we are between Yellowstone and Death Valley on 395?

if it is a Ford chassis then you have a sensor on the pumpkin drivers side facing foward that could cause this. The other thing is a wheel sensors that is could be dirty. They can be cleaned, If you have a code reader you will know for sure, If not AutoZone and others can read it for you.

Probably heat related. If it went out, the sensor is OK. A fried sensor will usually cause a steady ABS warning and you will lose the ABS function of your brakes. The brakes will still operate as normal but no ABS in an emergency stop.

Have you had the Bosch caliper recall (51101-C) done?

The former owner said the brake mod was done and we are driving in the desert so heat may be the problem, it has not reappeared.

Have you flushed the brake fluid in the past 2 years? Regardless of Ford or Chevy this is something that should be done regularly. Brake fluid will absorb moisture and that will reduce the braking ability of the system. By keeping the moisture out of the system you also greatly reduce the chance of rust or orrosion on internal brake parts.
