Can it be Dark Gray?
I was born in Great Falls, Mt. My parents moved when I was 5. I found them when I was 10 - they were in California.

Most Florida state parks stipulate you can use them for gray water but not black so I always check. Like others I always leave mine shut until it is really necessary to dump. It won't take you long to figure out what to do, and there will definitely be enough people around the dump station to help out. My first dump station experience looked like the movie RV...5 guys trying to give me pointers.
I hope there wasn't a poop geyser!

Thankfully no geysers - but there were some definitely different opinions on which way to empty. I always did it like everyone else on this thread (black then gray), but there are those that do it differently. The best was half black, then some gray, then the rest of the black, then finish with the gray. My new 5ver has a black tank flush, and I love it.

I would like to bash whomever sold your unit. We only bought one camper, but got a nice walk-through and an explanation of all the basics- including the basic rule of "dump a FULL black tank and then rinse slinky with a tank of gray water"

One additional thought.
You can add additional water to the black tank by doing dishes in a dishpan and dumping it into the toilet.
The added soap helps keep the tank cleaner.
Our first gray tank was small so this helped and is a good idea anyway.

We leave both gray and black closed..it really only takes a minute to go out there and pull the gray water lever and let it drain. Better than taking a chance of the gas or anything else coming up out of the sewer into the camper.
What about those places where the sewer backs up? I would imagine you wouldn't want black tank matter backing up into your gray tank. May never ever happen, until you say it will never happen.
