Newbie to towing and looking for some useful insite from you long time 5ers.
I just bought a new 2012 F250 6.2L gasser 3.73 rear SRW Crew Cab short bed FX4 4x4 lariat snow plow option 18" LT275/70R18E 125/122R tires with the following sticker ratings:
Ford Manual states GCWR-19,000lbs
Then Ford towing manual states 11,900lbs fully loaded 5th wheel.
took it to the scales with full tank of gas and me and the wife the weight was 7720lbs.
I haven't selected a hitch or 5er yet, I am a bit confused with such a large selection of trialers out there to select from. We aren't fulltimers we would be week to two week for now. Any help would be much appreciated in selecting a safe weight for the 5er.

It looks like the Ford numbers are pretty realistic. Pin weight of a 5er is 15 to 20 percent of the trailer weight. An 11, 900 lb 5er would have a pin weight of 1800 to 2400 lbs. A 7720 lb TV plus 2300 pin weight would equal the 10, 000 GVWR. An 11, 900 lb 5er plus a 7720 lb TV would equal 19, 620, not far from the 19, 000 GCWR. To be on the safe side, you may want to limit your 5er to11, 000 lbs , so that you have a margin for water, propane and supplies.
X2 on above post. My fiver scales in at around 11,800 loaded with pin around 2500. I was pullingit with an 08 3/4 ton Gm and was marginally over payload on the truck. I wasnt comfortable with this so i moved to a 1 ton srw. My point is dont buy too much trailer for your truck. Stick with the math of weight limits and you will be good. For your f250 loaded tongue weight less than 2000 will be comfortable.

I didn't think to get the actual front and rear axel weights when I was at the scale. I thought I would get that once I got the trailer but perhaps that is ass backwards? I have never towed anything the wife has towed horse trailers. I want to get as much 5er that will be comfortable to tow with no white knuckle rides...
I had no issues with my 10K lb rig, when I went to 13K it was too much.
2008 F350SD V10 with an 2012 Arctic Fox 29-5E When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
One thing. Make sure when you are shopping you understand that you want the above mentioned 11000 lbs to be gvwr and not a dry weight. If you got an 11000 b dry weight you would end up way over on your #'s.

You the wife, and add a 200 pound fifth wheel hitch, now the truck is nearly 8,000 pounds, and has a 10,000 pound GVWR. Should have picked the F-350 SRW with a slightly higher GVWR if you are really set on buying a fifth wheel.
19,000 - 8,000 = 11,000 maximum weight of other passengers, stuff in the back of the truck, and overall weight of the trailer.
So looking at trailers with a empty weight around 9,500 pounds would be my maximum recommendation, and they will probably have a 11,000 - 12,000 GVWR on the trailer, meaning that you can not load it to it's maximum, as you will be overloading the truck by a few hundred pounds. 500 pounds is only 5% over it's GVWR, and 1,000 pounds is about 10% overloaded.
I think you would have really enjoyed the 11,500 pound GVWR of the SRW F-350.
You are not the first one to pick a 3/4 ton because the dealership said "It will tow anything". Sure it will tow it, but not while staying within the GVWR.
Congrats on the new truck. We are looking at fivers in the 10, 500 GVWR and down for the truck in my sig. Many nice units available. Have to stay away from the " heavy" fivers with our 3/4 ton trucks. My trucks CAT weight includes me and tank of gas. Mine is an XLT....I think the XLT's are 3-400lbs lighter than the Lariat.
