We took our Lab Lucy to the vet today for her checkup and to have a fecal done.
While we were there I asked our vet to look at a fatty tumor she has on her leg. Personally I don't like looking at it and I want it removed.
The question is should I or is it better to leave it alone.
Our vet up north did the needle extraction and was very confident that it is just that, a fatty tumor. This vet concers.
My biggest concern is, as always anesthesia.
The tumor is on her left hind leg on the front of the knee where it bends. It doesn't bother her at all.
I don't know much about these, if they get bigger or not, this one seems to be bigger than it was over the summer.
Would you have it removed?

Sher

Our old dog has three.

Golf ball size one on left rear leg, walnut size one on right front leg and pea size one on her right side.
All have been checked and are just fatty tissues.

IF she should ever have to go under anesthesia for something (serious) then we would probably have them removed at that time if possible.

Otherwise.........nope.
She's 12 and has had them for years.

Same here. Our 4-year old Lhasa had one on here left hind leg up high where it really didn't come into any contact nor did it hinder her in any way. However, it was about the size of a large grape and was really, really ugly.

So, while she was out when we had her teeth cleaned for the first time, we opted to have the tumor removed. The cost was only about $50 bucks.

Opinion: It sounds like you need some new vets if you don't have any confidence in what they tell you.

Now why would I need new vets...they both told me the same thing and I have every confidence in what they have told me.
The decision is mine to make not theirs so my question was to my friends on rvnet as to whether or not they would do it or leave it alone.
Your response was rediculous...

I'm not a fan of cosmetic surgery, for me or my dogs.
As long as it is a harmless fatty deposit I'd pet my dog and leave it alone.

If it was big enough to bother me, I would have it removed only if having his teeth cleaned, or other procedure under anesthesia. I don't think I would just have that done, unless it was really bothering my dog.

Sorry but you asked for opinions, then complain when some one gives you one. Well if both vets told you the same thing which was leave it be, then if you have the confidence you say you have you wouldn't even be asking the question which indicates that your not all that confident. Sorry I wasted your time.

How old is the dog? The older the dog, the higher the risk.

We had a mast cell rumor removed from the hind leg of our Weimaraner Abby. The tumor was fairly small but because of the location it wasn't an easy healing process - there isn't a lot of extra skin to close the incision back there.

Personally, if it isnt anything more then a fatty tumor I'd leave it alone.

They can get bigger. They can also come back/regrow after removal. I had several removed at one time from my now 12.5-yo Brittany several years ago. The vet and I decided to remove them because some were in muscle tissue and one because the vet wasn't absolutely sure it was a lipoma (it was). I think all of them came back within a year.

I doubt I'd have one removed for cosmetic reasons unless the dog was going under anesthesia for another reason. If you decide to have it removed, be aware that it may come back.
