We're considering visiting the area in the spring. There appear to be a number of campgrounds. Any particular recommendations? We have a 29ft motor home. Also any things we should see or do? The road through the area is labeled a parkway can I assume it's OK for motor homes? Literature indicates ticks are real issue is that true?
Thanks to all who share their knowledge.

WE stayed at the Corps of Engineers campground Canal on Barkley Lake. There is a new section that is more updated. Some sites are not very level. They have shaded sites near the lake but you won't get TV. Go to Bowling Green KY to the Corvette factory. We drove thru Hillman Ferry and it was nice too. Very busy in the summer especially on the weekends. I would make reservations. For reviews, go to www.rvparkreviews.com for Kentucky and Grand Rivers, then if you don't see any you like there, you can click on cities surrounding Grand Rivers and find the perfect spot!

There are BOUNDLESS opportunities for boondocking at LBL and I often take advantage of those opportunities as most of the campgrounds are crowded, lit up like an all night dinette and regulated heavily. Of the big campgrounds in the park my favorite is Energy Lake (more of a campground less of an RV park) but if you're into back country camping don't miss this golden opportunity.

Piney CG is one of the nicest campgrounds we've stayed in, though the sites vary in their attractiveness. Though we used the toad to get around, the parkway is fine for RV's.

Piney is a very level CG on the south end of LBL and near Fort Donelson.

Fort Donelson for the Civil War history folks. Very nice and quiet .

Beautiful area--for camping, I can only comment on Hillman Ferry, located at the north end. We really liked it--lots of woods, walking areas, playground and FHU.

Also on the north end is the town of Grand Rivers--Patti's Settlement is a beautiful little shopping area and a very nice restaurant.

As for the park itself, there are a number of places to visit, like Homeplace, a planetarium, and a drive where you might see bison, etc.

If you haven't already, check out www.lbl.org and you will find lots of info and a really good map.

We stayed at Hillman Ferry. Its is around $10 a night with our Golden Age Pass. It is crowded in the summer. Sping and Fall less crowded. The COE Canel is a nice park. Eat at Patti's. I had a pork chop that was like a small roast, well about a inch and a half +. Super good food.

Ive stayed at Hillman a few times and Energy lake once. Two very different experiences, all positive, hillman like others have said is big and full in the summer and energy lake was very relaxed and less busy.

I was last at Hillman the first week of November and there were maybe 10 of us there.

Canal Campground can easily accommodate your rig. They have many sites on the water where you can watch the shipping and barge traffic. Most sites are water and electric but they do have a full hook up section. It is a very nice park.
