I note that one can buy a used rental unit from Cruise America for reasonable prices. Fairly late model but, of course lots of miles. Has anyone out there purchased one and what has your experience been? Especially the largest model. It appears that none have a slide out. I'm guessing they are cleaned up pretty well and in "good shape" but not sure how it would be to have so many miles on that drive-train and chassis?

I would expect them to be the same as any rental car - rode hard and put up wet. Experience with renting a couple of TTs years ago says they are pretty beat up.

Personally I would not touch one unless it was REALLY cheap.

In 2007 I bought a 2004 28R with 66,000 miles. It has been a wonderful unit and almost trouble-free. I had to reseal the dome over the shower and I cleaned it up even better than they did. If I was to do it again, I would ask that they not install the decals after the fresh coat of white paint. Mine crumbled in short order and because the decals are over full paint, it is very difficult to remove them.
If you find one you like then either take a trusted RV mechanic with you or at the very least bring a mechanic's creeper so you can check the underside throughly.
Best of luck to ya!

With Cruise America the pricing of their former rental units is:
the older the model year, the lower the price
the higher the mileage on the odometer, the lower the price

Which genrally means that the units the CA website that are prepped for sale are roughly 5 to 7 years old with 100,000 to 130,000 miles on the odometer. In 2011 I bought my 2005 28R with 109,000 miles on the odometer for $23k.

Link to a post of mine on the subject. The post contains links to other posts of mine concerning my 2005 Cruise America 28R.

"How would it be" I guess is the question.

Here is how it has been for us. We've had nothing major break since buying it. Other than that just minor fixes like drawer slide and muffler worked on. And biggest item was a front end work done around 100,000 miles which most people ignore (ex-rental or private). I would also have the money set aside to replace major items in drive chain if need be. Do a search on El monte or Cruise America on search box above and find all that has been posted. IMO most feel good about them.
One of the benefits we like the best is; just about everything can be purchased at local RV dealer, no special ordering or nothing fancy to break, all are basic units.

do a search in the Class C forum for "Buying a Rental Class 'C'"
dated 09/12/12

As a side note I have a 2006 Winnebago 24VR Chalet with under 70K miles and it is a great MH. Regards, Dick
