In California (and Oregon, and probably others) the freeways have signs that say something like, "All vehicles while towing, limit 55 mph". This is even when the posted limit is 65 or 70.

My motorhome tows a little pickup truck. I assume my speed limit is indeed 55. So my question is, have any of you gotten speeding tickets when going say 65 or 70 mph while towing?

Does it happen yes. Does it happen often no. I generally take my lead from the truckers, if they exceeding 55 I am probably ok if they staying real close to 55 better be there too. It is a pain when you get way out on I10, 40 or 5 and the regular speed goes to 70 but towing is still 55!

Is this a "what are the odds"-type question, or what???

Hi,

My wife got pulled over while driving in the left lane, going about 65 passing a bunch of trucks. She should have known there was a CHP around because the two right lanes where full of tractor trailer trucks going 55 MPH. And Interstate 10 had just dropped from 4 lanes to 3 lanes eastbound just east of Palm Springs. She only got the ticket for driving in the left lane, not going 65. We where towing a car behind our motorhome.

Good point Fred one of our other towing rules in CA if there are 3 or more lanes and you are towing you are not allowed out beyond the 2nd from right shoulder. Except for a freeway interchange or when the right most lane is an exit only lane. Watch for signs that say trucks ok with arrow pointing to lane. These are usually a through traffic lane on a 5 or more lane section.

We in our 2002 Dodge ram diesel towing a Big Foot 25 had been running with 5 semis from Bakersfield all day at 65, I have 2 trucks in front of me and three behind, we come thru Mt Shasta and a CHP saw those Wa. plates and the red lights came on pulling us out of line. $385.00

As Dennis says, "55 is the legal speed limit for towing. It doesn't matter how anyone has gotten away with anything over that speed limit while they've towed. The simple answer is, if you run over 55 while towing, you run the risk of getting either sited for it or, at the least, a warning.

There's only a few dozen variables that will or can influence whether or not an officer feels like taking action. So, again, the point is, the speed limit is 55 while towing. You can come up with ten zillion reasons as to why you were traveling over it when you get stopped, but if that officer is having a bad day, he/she has every bit of the law on his or her side in writing you a citation.

I'm not chastising you for asking the question. It's like a lot of vehicle/moving violations etc. There's lots of folks running over the 65' max length in CA and have never gotten stopped. That doesn't mean it's legal, it simply means they've not been stopped, YET!

The CA speed limit is traffic flow whatever the speed. Towing 55. No exceptions.
