RE: The old girl is back - where to start

Yea, I got it too. Thought we would see the next installment of the old girl. It was good to think of anyway even if it didn't happen. Maybe Steve will be posting more stuff about his current projects. Indeed there is something about the older coaches that stirs the interest, something more than just another old vehicle to deal with. The info he shared in the process to rebuild the old girl was still nothing short of incredible. Some of those things I hope I never have to do but if I do, it was nice to have seen them here anyway.

RE: Replacing Couch with TV & Stand??

I like the idea of the TV on the side wall. I have an older MH and it isn't used much for the family. Mostly just for the GF and I. I don't need the barrel chairs and it would be a lot more enjoyable to watch it there than above the front seats. Where do you find the mechanism to lift and stow it? I need a good cabinet maker I think too.
Happy New Year to all...

RE: Just got my first Class A

Not sure how you made that trade but you did good. That is a classy looking coach. Those older Allegros were some fine looking machines. Glad to see you with that and planning ti use it instead of it getting trashed. I've got an 89 Elandan and I think the older coaches had way more character than the newer ones. Keep us all posted on what you are doing with it and to it.
Thanks for sharing.

RE: classic mh

Could be any number of reasons for the replacement. Do you know if they were replaced at the same time? Not sure of the requirements in your state but I would think if it was flood/water damage, it would have been noted on the title. Have you had it in to be checked a Cummins shop yet? I'm a big advocate of going back to the OEM for checks when possible. Seems like you have a good combination for a powertrain. Post some pics of the coach. The Rockwoods were a great looking coach. I hope you get out and enjoy it.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I see......a little obsessive/compulsive when it comes to the details. Only a perfectionist would make his dents disappear like that. I say that with awe and envy. His work is truly impressive. My hat is off to him.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I've been following this thread for a long time. I am amazed at the quality of work and innovation of the owners. I've been an airframe guy for many years and this certainly piques my interest to have one of these when I get home. In one of the pictures, it shows three patches on each side on the rear of the unit. Was there damage or dents there? Looking at the interior shots it doesn't appear to have been bent. Just curious why you installed these. I will admit to having been out of the loop for a bit so if I missed the reason earlier, my apologies.

RE: My first motorhome

Welcome to the group!!
It's always nice to see another vintage coach being used instead of scrapped. Please do post some pics and keep us involved in your progress. I have an older M/H and can always use the knowledge on how to fix different things. Congrats on your purchase and enjoy...

RE: Just bought a 88' Rockwood XL 35 Gas Pusher

Good day all.
Please post a picture of this one for the rest of us to see. I have an 89 front engine gas motorhome and I have to say that it isn't noisy at all. I would like to see a gas pusher rig. Thanks for the post.

RE: What is a decent coach?

Here's my thoughts on the matter. I don't know if you have made a decision or not to buy yet but I'll post anyway. Recently I did the same thing you are doing now. I have not previously owned any RVs so I was in uncharted ground for me. When I made the decision to buy one, I knew that I wanted to buy an older gas powered model to use for awhile to keep the initial investment low and to see what I thought of having an RV. I had looked and saw there were many on the market with low miles and these could usually be bought for 10K or less. I picked an approximate length I wanted and then picked a few models I really liked with some features that I knew wanted. Did the requisite internet search and found a few likely models, phone calls and emails flew, had some friends take a look for me (I'm overseas) and narrowed the choice even further. Located a great Winnebago in TN. Was able to make a deal with a couple that had health issues and were unable to use it anymore. Here's my opinion. There are many out there on the market. Not likey you will pick one and keep it forever. Find one in your price range with the features you want and go for it. Will you have problems? Probably.. Set aside a few bucks and go for it. It happens. I've a few million miles of commercial driving behind me, I've had new trucks break down on me. Use your head and not your heart and make a good deal. I bought mine and flew in to pick it up. Had a great drive home and loaded my kids and grandkids for a trip to see my son graduate from Basic Training. We had a great time and it was our first RV experience. The Winnebago was excellent. Almost three thousand miles and a lot of smiles. Maybe someday I'll get a newer model. For now and my infrequent trips to the US, this one is perfect. I can't imagine a newer one would allow me or the kids to have anymore fun than we did. Recommendations are great but we all have a unique perspective of what we think is right. Get one and get out and enjoy.

RE: New roof for the Elandan

If you are just using it for a reflective properties you might look at a product called Seal A Flex. It is a paint type product designed to cover waterproof decks and used on pool decks. My guess is your trying to get something close to white for the cooling effect.
Pretty much it. I think it will help to keep the temps down in the sun and also look cleaner when it's washed. Does that stuff stick to metal? Realistically I don't think there would be any product to be rolled or sprayed on that would have any insulating effect. I want to be able to make it good and right when I'm done and something that will last for a number of years. Next time this needs to be done it should be my son's issue to work on.

RE: my new to me1984 23' winnebago chieftain

eternabond comes in all different widths,2" up to 36". it comes in different colors. it is very sticky. it is not cheap. i wanted to properly prep the surface so that it would stick good so i scraped all the tar off and then used degreaser to remove the residue then used aceetone to wipe it down before sticking it for good. i used the 4" width eternabond. when i get done doing the vents and ac unit i might use a white roof coating to protect the tape from UV rays and also just tie the whole job together for looks. i am not sure about that because it seems like it may make repairs in the future more difficult. this is my first time useing eternabond.
on a different note i hit the jackpot today and found a FREE downloadable chevy p chassies motorhome manual!!!!!! here. tons of great info!!!!!
http://www.bdub.net/manuals/P30/index.html
Great stuff, I'll have to check out the manual too. I like what you have done with the roof repairs. I'm thinking I will do the same thing. I'm still leaning towards the white roof paint to reflect the sun a bit better. More reasearch to do but this is a great start. I'll pick up some Eternabond when I get home.
Thanks for the info and for sharing...Please keep us informed of your progress..

RE: my new to me1984 23' winnebago chieftain

Not being familiar with the EternaBond stuff, does it come in different widths and/or sizes or colors? How clean does it have to be for it to adhere? Is it paintable? Will you now paint over the entire roof or add any more coatings to it? I really like the idea of painting mine white just for better reflectivity when it's in the sunlight. Is that needed or is the idea a waste of time?
So many questions....I'm overseas and can't see or work on mine now. One of these days I'll get back and this is one of the first tasks I want to accomplish.
Thanks for sharing your info and post.
Stay safe out there.

RE: The old girl is back - where to start

I have read this thread in it's entirety. The work done and resoucefulness shown was great to see. I have an older coach and can only hope to do some of the things done to the "old girl". Been away from the forum a little of late. Does anyone know where the MH went? A new status or maybe another chapter in the book? Just curious. Great old coach that was worth the time and effort.

RE: New roof for the Elandan

Thanks for the replies here folks.
Where does one find the Eternabond? I can't say I have ever seen it in the stores I prowl around when I'm in the US. Any opinions on painting the roof with soome sort of coating to help protect it more and to give it some reflectivity? I like the idea of the white color on the top.
Thanks for the help.

RE: 84 Windcruiser Restoration/Renovation

roof looks nice. what kind of coating is that over it? i would like to coat my aluminum roof with something like that after i eternabond the seams.
Thanks. I've applied three coats (will apply two more after I install new A/Cs) of Black Jack Ultra-Roof 1000 Elastomeric Roof Coating.
Is that coating a DIY roll on or is it sprayed on? I like the white color of it. Does the picture show the finished product?
I'm getting ready to seal the roof on my Elandan. This is good info. Thanks for posting and please keep it up.

Great post. It looks like you are making good progress on bringing it back. I love to see that. Keep us posted on what you are doing with it. I recently got an 89 Winnebago. Mine didn't need too much but I plan to keep it and am really interested in what you are doing and running into. Keep up the posts.

RE: New roof for the Elandan

I'll have to check the seal between the front cap and roof. I haven't noticed any evidence of leaks there but I will look again. I did see the insulation in that area has degraded and will need to be changed but that will wait until I pull the TV to put in a flat panel. I'll clean the roof and seal the seams. I got a response from the factory telling me to do that also. Seems right to me. I didn't know so I asked. That was a good thing too. Being able to get some info and answers from the manufacturer, way too many have gone away. Makes me like this one even more.
I appreciate the comments here. I've a lot to learn about this RV thing.
Thanks all.

RE: New roof for the Elandan

Mine is an 89 model. It appears to be a fiberglass roof but has had some stuff(?) put on it in places and is in need of a good cleaning. This looks to be one of those projects that I would like to do once and be done with it for many years to come.
Thanks.
