RE: Reno, NV to Petaluma, CA

Made the trip two weeks ago on a Saturday. Definitely X3 on the Lakeville Road route. Sacramento, Fairfield/Vacaville always has traffic if you are anywhere near rush hours on weekdays. Rob X4 on Lakeville Rd. to Petaluma. We did it today. From CA 395 we came down Hwy 50. The Sacramento traffic was horrendous at 1pm. We normally don't do big cities but are visiting daughter for the weekend....then we're outta here!

RE: Off pavement in a Class A?

We've done gravel roads for 16 years - 8 in our 40' motorhome. We choose roads carefully though - sometimes pre-scouting it with our Jeep. We love boondocking!

West Yellowstone to Colter Bay? Just come straight through Yellowstone to the south end.

Yep, Casino Queen DOES allow children - they even have a playground!

RE: Must See Suggestions: St. Louis, MO to Sioux Falls, SD

St. Louis seems a popular topic. Just an FYI for families with kids.... Casino Queen doesn't allow kids in the campground or their restaurant. I wanted to stay there this summer for an overnight to see the Arch and I'm glad I saw this info on another forum or we would have been in for a nasty surprise after a long day of driving. Yes, Casino Queen DOES allow children. They even have a playground!

RE: Advise on Dingys

Millions of RVers tow to gas stations and mountains. Restaurants? That depends. Most restaurant lots aren't big enough. We normally don't stop at restaurants until we're set up at a campground and take our car. We have lunch in the motorhome. Sometimes for dinner we'll stop at a truck stop and refuel and eat in their restaurant where there is plenty of room. It really can be done. :) Personally, I could not imagine having to rent a car all the time. We travel the secondary roads and like to explore the areas and countryside. Can't do that on a whim of "this is a pretty area, let's stay here for a few days" with no rental agency close. You'd have to always make plans for the rental. We typically don't even reserve at campgrounds. We don't travel on schedule and it's more relaxing that way. Good luck!

RE: Grand Teton Park, Moran, WY

AuntEthel: Yes, you 'could' tour Yellowstone from Colter Bay but it would involve a LOT of slow driving miles and a very long day. That's really not the way to see Yellowstone. Try to get reservations at Fishing Bridge RV in Yellowstone itself. They have full hookups. If you only have a few days to spend in Yellowstone it's better than none. Also, there are many campgrounds that don't accept reservations but you'd need to arrive at them between 9-11am if you can - when folks are leaving. This would be doable if you're staying in Colter. They are, however, dry camping which you said you are leery about doing. Give it a try for a couple nights. It's a cinch. Just have your water tank filled before you go and your holding tanks empty. Conserve water and electric usage and you'd be just fine for a couple nights. Here's a link to Yellowstone campgrounds: Yellowstone Campgrounds

RE: Buying First Motorhome - Help Please

The links given you by Ivylog are very good examples of what you can purchase for your price range. Many good deals on good motorhomes are out there. To the other posters who say they had to buy new tires or batteries - every vehicle has to eventually have new tires or batteries so that statement shouldn't apply. New TV - that would be an option, not a requirement. Bottom line - you CAN find one in your price range and you CAN find a good one. You know it's not going to be perfect but if you can do some inside decorating or fixing-up yourself that's great. The important thing to look for is the chassis, if service records are available and if there's any sign of water leaks you should pass it up immediately. Good luck and we know you'll enjoy RVing!!!

RE: Must See Suggestions: St. Louis, MO to Sioux Falls, SD

Assuming you're taking the interstates I-70/I-29 to Sioux Falls, SD there isn't too much along the way and along the interstate and you have 600 miles from St. Louis. So I would spend 4 of your 5 days in the St. Louis area and another for an overnight to break up the 600 miles. You've gotten good ideas already for St. Louis. There is a lot to do there - if you like big cities. :) (That's where we were raised.) We always enjoy staying at Edmund Babler State Park. It's huge with manicured lawns, trees and big sites. It's an easy commute to the Arch. Have fun!

RE: What to see in Anchorage...

Drive down the Kenai Peninsula to Seward or Homer. Neat places. You'd also have time to go to Denali National Park. Enjoy the precious time you have. You can't go wrong whatever you do!

RE: Passport America Lifetime, Thanks all, I'll pass

We belong to Passport and it pays for itself in a few stops. Take a look at their campground list online and depending where you travel, will they work out for you? You do have to be flexible because there are restrictions. Read thoroughly. As for the parks themselves - some aren't great, some are good, some are excellent. It's the whole gammet. We typically don't stay in private campgrounds period - much preferring public ones, but once in a while we need to do so and Passport works for us. Like was stated above, don't buy the Lifetime do year by year.

RE: Highway Question?

We've also done it and it's a beautiful drive. Be sure to stop in Pagosa Springs for a long relaxing soak at the springs. They are very clean concrete pools of varying temperatures. We spent two full mornings just moving between the pools. It also overlooks the river. A very pleasant setting and right in town. Enjoy!!

RE: West bound trip & need advice

What highway will you be coming into the St. Louis area? We love Edmund Babler State Park - huge manicured sites, trees and a beautiful park, hiking, biking, pool. It's an easy commute to see the Arch. Tetons: This is one of our favorite parks which we've been to often. It's a long drive from W. Yellowstone. Do yourself a favor and stay there. The hiking trails are awesome and of all abilities. The scenery is like a little Alps and altogether different from Yellowstone. Take a gentle float trip down the Snake River and you might see a moose in the water with you! If you need full-hookups, Colter Bay RV Park is the one. If you can do without hookups, there's Colter Bay campground or Gros Ventre campground, both of which have 300 non-reservable sites. We like Gros Ventre. If you leave W. Yellowstone in the a.m. your sure to get a spot in the Tetons if you arrive by noon or so. We never make reservations for either the Tetons or Yellowstone. You'll probably head south out of the Tetons - going through Jackson. Just south of town are 2 large groceries - on both sides of the highway. It's a good place to re-stock as W. Yellowstone just has tiny expensive groceries. You'll also find better fuel prices heading out of Jackson toward Alpine/Thayne. Have a great trip!

RE: 10 Worst States for Retirement!

I paid 1/3 the property tax in CA due to living in same house over 30 years. Fire insurance is way cheaper in CA when you have a fire hydraunt close by and fire station less than a mile away. Pricey car insurance. Don't have to drive far to shop but getting out of town to camp was a major project. Most of our camping was sailing up & down the coast because we were a mile from beach. silvercorvette. As a retired LEO you have a 50 state CCW. So why did bring up that issue? I was pointing out that most people that do not have the right to carry in 50 states are probably the people that need it most. As we get older we are not as strong a we were when we were younger which should be something people should consider. Also people that are not familiar with the area they are visiting may accidentally wander into a high crime area. There were a few times I made a wrong turn and discovered I was in what might be considered a bad part of town. I was comforted by the fact I had the ability to protect myself but there are many people that do not have the option that retired police officers do. 16 years of full-timing here, camping in all states, including Alaska, in public parks including national forests and boondocking out in the middle of nowhere by ourselves....we've never been afraid and have had no problems. Using common sense is all you need - not a gun!

RE: Hello! Advice on Purchasing...

You mentioned a pop-up. We wouldn't advise one for your circumstances. They are a pain to set up and pack away if you're going to be moving around a lot. It's not a good experience in rain or wind either. Why don't you look into a Casita or Scamp hard-sided trailer or any other small travel trailer? It would be much more comfortable for you and easy to hook up and go. They are lightweightand would be better insulated from the weather than a pop-up. Definitely look for one with air conditioning as you're from Arkansas. Good luck!
