RE: Few Repair/Maintance questions for new RV owner

Billy,
Congrats on the new to you Rv. 1st , don't get discouraged while you work your way the the problems of new to you Rv . Sometimes it's an easy fix, sometimes not. We've all been there .
On the vibration . Check the age of the tires. Your Rv could've been sitting a lot and someone else mentioned flat spot. To check the age, it's usually found on the tire sidewall near the DOT imprint in an oval encasement, something like this (0610) the first 2 numbers are the week and the last 2 numbers are the year the tire was built. If you knew this already, sorry for the rehash., but you might have an old bad tire(s) causing vibration, happened to me. Sometimes the tire is mounted with the imprint towards the undercarriage.
Just a thought on the overheating. Did you replace the radiator cap with a new one when you flushed. I had a bad radiator cap caused my temp to rise.
When this happened to me on the ac prob, it occurred just before my alternator froze up, my compressor was working fine. Just a thought.
Check with Home Depot or lowes for material to insulate the engine
You've got a older puller, your close to the engine , more noise.
Not trying to insult you here but you have an entry level Rv , in the interest of weight management they use lightweight materials to build your Rv. More susceptible to road noises.not a thing wrong with , just the way it is.
More knowledgeable people here than me, but maybe some of this will help.

RE: Samsung Refer Install Over Propane Heater (Height Issues)

Good job. I had hopes of doing this also but it was not to be. My 03 Dipl has the low ceiling and the furnace below the refridge. Didn't want to give up the furnace , so I went with the Amish cooling unit. Put it in last week. Works fine. Hope yours work good for you.

RE: Help, question on cargo heat!!!!!!

There is a switch on your control panel in the coach marked..system heat or bay heat...you turn that on and then the heat will turn on if the snap disk drops to 39 degrees inside the compartment...
We have a 2003 dipl, similar, The above is prolly correct . Should be a switch that illuminates when turned on. If it doesn't illuminate then it just might need replacing, ours burns out about every other year. Next to it there is a red light, similar to your water pump light, that only illumates when the heater comes on. Gotta check the light on this cause they burn out too. You can hear the cargo heater when it turns on after the temp drops

RE: Parking on sand

Yah, concrete! Be careful.
Really helpful! The OP asks for suggestions to prevent him from getting stuck and you try to be cute. All the other posters attempted to give helpful suggestions. I do not understand why you would even bother to make a posting; don't you have better things to do?

RE: Parking on sand

I wouldn't park on it. At an FMCA show awhile back, tractors had to pull us out after they parked us in dirt. It rained and we all got stuck. It was pretty messy and I didn't like have my rv drug backwards . It didn't take much to get us stuck.

RE: I want to be able to do SOMETHING

Peter , Hey, just gotta wash your hands more often. And, We are not promised tomorrow. So that said, alot of us here are retired or getting close to it and are in our 50's , 60's and 70's.
Remember growing up............ Us kids...
Didn't have seat belts in the backseat of our parents cars. And still didn't have them when we learned to drive.
Rode around in the back of pickup trucks.
Rode bicycles without a helmet
Rode skate boards without a helmet.
I still snow ski without a helmet
We wore cowboy hats when we rode horses and bucking steers.
We drank from the same soda bottle.
We drank water from the garden hose.
We settled our problems with our fists and then played together later.
We jumped off the roof playing paratrooper.
Our playground was the street. baseball, kick ball and football.
We survived our teenage years.
Alot of us went off to war.
Alot of of came back to dangerous jobs.
Alot of us then retired.
We did okay.
Don't be afraid of doing stuff.
Look at what you probably did growing up......and survived it

RE: Traveling in Mexico (Puerto Penasco-Rocky Pointe)

Just left puerto Penasco last week after a month long stay.
You can get Mexican insurance in Aho or Why travel store. I personally think you can get better prices in puerto Penasco like Alejandro de Portugal insurance.
Do travel in the daytime.
Do be aware that the lukeville crossing is becoming somewhat like other crossings in that going southbound we were warned about produce and meat and alcohol products being brought in to Mexico . You can buy whatever you need in pp.
do bring rabies paperwork for the doggies.
Do bring your passports.
Don't bring the obvious illegal items (hope we don't have to list the obvious stuff)
The reef, Playa Bonita , playa del oro are good full hook ups Rv spots. You'll find them on the net.
We stay at the Reef Rv park. Beach front' you'll need a reservation. 700 bucks a month, 50 amp service. Other than beach front , you prolly don't need a reservation . 500 bucks for the month
do bring sun tan lotion
Do obey all traffic laws.
Do learn a few phrases in Spanish. Always helps.
Don't be intimidated by checkpoints, and cops/military with big rifles, we gottem too here in the us.
Peso or dollars are fine. Santander bank is a bank America affiliate. You can use ur debit card in the machine for pesos
Do fill up ur gas tank before coming back, cheaper fuel.
Do realize ur in a foreign country and that there are a lot of good people in Mexico, I know cause I've met a lot of them.
Do have a good time.
Whad I miss?

RE: Norcold 1201 LRim cooling unit

My 1200 died last month. I'm looking at an amish CU or a residential refridge. Haven't decided yet. Don't believe I would use a rebuilt Norcold CU. When ours stopped working, was able to buy a small apt model electric refridge. We stood it next the dead Norcold. Used that for the month we were in Mexico. The small fridge will now make a nice basement refridge for my office.

RE: Rivering on steer tire

Don, that wear seems to be on Class A rv's using G670 Goodyears. Its a tire made for rv's. Some have used them for years with no problems. Alot, too many I think, have had this happen. Many of us have spoken to Goodyear reps, gotten alignments, checked the ride height etc and still it happens. Doesn't start right away but usually in the 2nd or 3 rd year and the fix that many have said is to overinflate and rotate the tires. Lotsa info on the web.

RE: Positioning coach at fuel pump

Don't have this prob but our good friends have a method that works well for them. He drives and when they get close to positioning, she gets out with a radio and they have a "language" they use for her to guide him in to the spot. That way they don't hit anything and position correctly. She does the same as they are exiting the pumps. Fairly sure others have done this but it works for them

That looks exactly like the two steer tires I changed out in August last year . Mine were G670 goodyears. 2nd set (and last set) that did that to me.

RE: Don't take your guns to town..

I am curious, if you feel the need to carry guns in the U.S. (for protection I assume) How can you feel safe in Mexico without them?
I don't carry them anytime in the RV but I would be concerned for safety in Mexico with this drug cartel thing going on.
I usually don't get involved in these conversations but I'll try this. I go to Puerto Penasco Mx, which is about 64 miles across the border. We travel in the daytime only . There are Border patrol/ mexican and american at the beginning of our trip. Mexican police, Mexican marine check points and we have Puerto Penasco police in town and through our rv park occasionally. Can bad things happen. Yes . We feel fairly safe. Would I like to carry my gun with me? Yes, but I no longer do. Yes bad things can happen but in the realm of dangerous, we got more problems in our hometowns of Las Vegas and Phoenix area.
When I was a policeman in Las Vegas we couldn't carry our firearms into the Federal Court and that was in uniform, on duty. Do a search and you'll find recent shooting(s)/murders inside the Las Vegas Federal Court. Can't legally carry them in the casinos either. Couple of shootings/murders there too. Can't carry firearms on on the airlines, as much as I would like to and hopefully we haven't forgotten that. Can't legally carry firearms in alot of schools, college campuses etc and I figure there may be a need there. I'm retired military also, I could add a page full about rules of engagement. Guns , no guns.
So there were/are alot of places that I go in the U.S. were I didn't/don't feel as safe as I wish it were, but I still go.
So we go to Mexico, park on the beach cause we love it here. Each year we assess the risk and plan accordingly and don't bring firearms. Life is a risk.

RE: Don't take your guns to town..

If you come this way, the "Why" travel store in "Why" Arizona, I believe will store them for you. Why is on the way to the Lukeville crossing which leads to Puerto Penasco MX which is a good place to get your feet wet (literally).
When this thread gets moved to the Mexico section, there are others there that can tell you about other areas.

RE: Rig Destroyed by Fire at The Reef

Yes the Puerto Penasco bomberos got there in a satisfactory time. They made a good effort.
I thanked them before they left.
Theres alot you can do to limit your loss in the event of a "bad day"
Here's what we do When we leave the coach. We have a "RV Message Center" notebook that attaches to our rv door. W bought it at the Quartzsite rv show.(Keeps blowing off in the wind here gotta fix that) . Has paper, pencil and our cell phone number on it. We had a window plak made up that hangs in our windshield, that says "In the event of Emergency, Please rescue our dogs". We have a "greaseboard" in our car that we update everytime we move with our rv park, spot number and our friends phone number so somebody can get to our pups in the event we leave this planet suddenly.
When we do leave the coach. I shut the water off at the faucet and make sure the furnace is off along with the water heater. ALWAYS. We have a "Sentry" box thats supposed to be fireproof up to a certain temp. Passports and important papers go there. We have fire extinguishers throughout the rv and I made sure the wife knows how to use them. We also have talked about an exit strategy if we have to leave the rv if a fire starts. Coming to Mexico, we have Progressive insurance that covers our rv/dogs, along with our mexican insurance. Here's one that might make some uncomfortable, we don't lock the door to the rv. Anybody wants to steal something that badly, they'll just break in anyway. Might be a bit of overkill but I've had a lifetime of dealing with victims of various disasters when things go bad. View My Video
WE just hope if there's a fire, someone will just open the door and let our pups out.

RE: Rig Destroyed by Fire at The Reef

I carry two large extinguishers along with 5 inside the rv and it wouldn't have been enough.
I ran towards the burning 5th wheel with a big extinguisher but stopped when I saw how quickly the fire had spread and found that nobody was inside . instead went back and got my camera The first fire unit showed up and was putting water on it and it wasn't making much of a difference. The second unit showed up and they put two hoses on it and it didn't make much of a difference except to prevent it from traveling to the Phaeton rv. A refill tanker showed up shortly thereafter but it was totally gone by that time. (SEE video of mine earlier post). I've watched hundreds of cars/vehicles burn and this 5th went up fast enough that nobodys extinguisher was gonna put it out. Something for us all to keep in mind.

RE: Propane usage vesus generator

Alot depends on where you're at and what type of camping you'll be doing. Here's what I've been doing for the last 10 years. When we dry camp, refrigerator on propane, we run the generator once or twice a day depending on usage so as to recharge the house batteries. Running the generator under load, location permitting, for about 45 minutes once a month is good for the generator. Alot of refrigerators have have "auto" function that switches back and forth between gas/electric. When dry camping we primarily use the furnace for heating (propane). Heat pumps we use when hooked to shore power for heat and a/c (electric) . Furnace is more efficient at heating a chilled rv., we sometimes use it even when hooked to shore power. We've been know to run the generator in extreme heat to power the heat pumps for the a/c when traveling or dry camping. Yes there are costs involved but a properly tuned generator, depending on frequency of use , doesn't use that much fuel. Gas/propane, depending on location is fairly reasonable based on amount used.
I try to use all the rv systems to keep them in smooth, good working order. Nothing worse than having a motor/system not function properly because of non use.

RE: Travel Plans for 2013/2014

You couldn't get me to leave the U.S. its way too dangerous in Mexico, I'd never ..........just kiddin. Sorry, couldn't resist. (gotta have at least one).
If you were headin this way, I could tell you about our town on the beach called Puerto Penasco.
Since you're going the other way, all I can say is enjoy, have a good time.
