RE: A month in the great northwest. What would you do?

We live south of Tucson and have done the route to Cannon Beach several times and plan to do it again - God willing - in 2015. Route takes you close to the desired South Rim of the Grand Canyon and up the 395. Have done the northern CA once in RV - couple of times more in car - and it is beautiful....can be tough to get to though. Will leave that up to others.

RE: A month in the great northwest. What would you do?

Once again I agree with 4runner guy. And the repeated advice on this Forum....too much it too little time.
We have always divided ours into two parts - up Glacier / Banff way on one trip and the OR Coast / WA / Columbia River, etc on another. Throw in Yellowstone / Teton and you have a full trip on either. You could spend a month in CO. And UT has great spots also.
The journey is the destination in many respects.

RE: Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch - Picacho, AZ

Yes, at Picacho Peak --- not at the Ostrich Farm! :-)
There is camping at Picacho Peak at the state park and also a very nice (55+) RV park there (right next to Rooster Cogburn).
And, great hiking at Picacho Peak - summiting is a challenge!

Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch - Picacho, AZ

About halfway between Tucson and Phoenix (near Picacho Peak) is the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch. We have passed in literally dozens of times - thinking we should stop in and see it. Never have. Until today.
This is one of the neatest / fun places we have seen. Would be really great with children but adults (it was me, DW and 46 year old daughter from London) can enjoy it as well.
Very clean and great staff.
You feed the ostriches, goats, deer, donkeys, ducks, prairie dogs and some fantastically beautiful parrot type birds - and see two HUGE tortoises.
$5 each - includes the food!
One of the best deals and most fun ever!

RE: Wterton/Glacier parks

Johnson's can be hilly, uneven and tight. I would recommend the KOA on the east side; have stayed there 3 times.
LOVE Glacier!

RE: Utah RVResorts and Campgrounds

IMHO - and we have traveled Utah a lot and going back in mid Sept again - there are very few "Resorts" there. There is the one in Virgin and we have stayed there - would never return nor recommend due to their lack of ethics.
But there are many good to excellent RV parks - not resorty and activities and all. And some really good ones that are near the major attractions of the National Parks and other wonderful sights.
Staff "friendly" depends many times on how the day is going and how late in the season it is. And how their day is going. :-) Guest friendly is a roll of the dice.
And what is good today could be thru a couple of owners in 4 years or just go downhill. And a marginal one might decide to clean up their act. Four years is a lot of time. Which is why I always check RVParkReviews for the latest info.
Example of this is years ago we had serious problems with Spanish Trail south of town in Moab (we had a major health issue, cancelled ahead of their cutoff date, they refused to refund the money in line with their policy or return our bundled mail that had been sent to them for us). But is was sold and I have talked to new owners and I certainly would go back there. And we used to like Moab Valley and it seems to have gone downhill. We could not get in there last time as they were full and stayed at Portal- not a good experience but can see the consistent high ratings so that is where we would go back. Point is - lots can change in 4 years.
But, in the For What It's Worth category ........
Moab (for Arches & Canyonlands NP's) - Portal or Spanish Trail
Bryce - Ruby's
Zion - Zion Canyon (think it is called - not stayed there but driven thru)
Torrey - (for Capitol Reef) - Thousand Lakes
Gouldings (for Monument Valley which is actually in Arizona)
Wish I could help you with the higher elevation places but have not been there. And further north around SLC we have just overnighted.
My 2ยข worth.

6 volt batteries

Question was asked of me and I had heard the reason a long time ago but forgot. :-)
Some 5ers / trailers us 2 - 6 volt batteries connected to get the 12 volts. Others use a 12 volt battery.
Why are the 2 6's used? (That is what I have)
Thanks.

RE: Utah RVResorts and Campgrounds

Being there in the summertime and looking for "resort" places really narrows it down. First of all, to my knowledge, there are not a lot of "best resorts" in Utah; at least I have not found them and have traveled the state a lot. There are good RV parks and campgrounds. However, the majority of them will be quite hot in the summer. This is a real challenge you have presented based on your parameters and can be, IMHO, quite limiting.
It will be interesting to hear the responses - I may have missed a few spots but we certainly have been to all the main areas to see.

Eurocamper X2
Big and varied state - can be extremely hot in the summer and you can be up to your eyeballs in snow in the winter.
Am sure all of us would be more than willing to help if we had more details.

RE: Yuma area, Best Parks?

I don't really agree with SteveRuff about the potential RV experience but glad we were enlightened about the dental work! (Of course we know about dental work in Mexico as we live south of Tucson and go to Nogales).
But to the point. The Palms is a great rv park. It had great pools, great dog areas (4 of them), great green belt, large sites (gravel with a concrete pad), etc. It is the only place that had a full size lap pool in the about 160 private rv parks we have stayed in. Being lap swimmers we really liked this. And another pool and two hot tubs / spas. The billards room had 18 tables and was used for the state championships so you know the tables are good. I don't shuffleboard but the best we have ever seen.
There are a lot of things around Yuma to see and we spent time driving and hiking the KOFA Wildlife Refuge.
Obviously, his parks are not in southern AZ. We heard helicopters quite a bit where we live. Part of life here in this neck of the woods. And it is a problem but will not / should not affect you in Yuma itself. Even the three times we have been out in KOFA driving or hiking we have never seen any illegal activity.
For pictures of things to do and see in Yuma, go to www.LaurenBarbara.com and the Wanderings link on the left to two links under AZ. And there is a great restored old mining town in KOFA that I do not have pictures of.
Email or PM me if you want more info.

RE: Tucson, Rincon(west) or Lazydays?

We live just south of Tucson and occasionally check out the parks for people who ask. We always come back to the same two - and you named them - Rincon West or LazyDays. LazyDays is more centrally located which is an advantage. And right next to Camping World if you need things.
Great list of things to see here above. I would add the Tumacacori Mission if you are heading to the south of the city. Just south of Tubac. Desert Museum for sure. San Xavier is another great place. In fact, a wonderful day would be San Xavier, Titan (in the town we live in), Tubac and Tumacacori and even swing up to Madera Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains. All great places.
Not sure why DesertHawk is giving you all the info about Las Cruces - seems to me you asked about Tucson! :-)
Lots of Mexican restaurants all over Tucson but our favorite place to eat - and very reasonable is a top rated Greek place called Opa!. We were there again two nights ago.
If I can be of assistance, PM or email me; we have lived here 10 years.
Enjoy.

RE: Reservations about reservations

Our trips are planned as much as a year in advance with many reservations at that point in time because we can get the kind of spot we want, many times able to pick it out and lock it in, and we are many times going to places that are popular and will be busy.
Have we adjusted and gone to "Plan B". Of course. Sometimes out to about Plan J or K. :-)
"You will never have a problem traveling without reservations until you have a problem." This is right on - have heard horror stories from our friends who never USED TO make reservations.

Kinda wondering if I can do it in my Rav4 - FWD only. Have no clue what the road is like but do know there is a HUGE saguaro cactus along that route I want to photograph.

Tucson - Benson

The is a route between these two towns that I have never driven and looks interesting - but wonder what type of vehicle I would need if, indeed, the road was bad.
From Tucson it would go out E. Tanque Verde Road which turns into E. Redington Road that looks like it could be kinda testy - the map is flat but the line is real squiggley! :-) And looks like an elevation gain of about 2000 feet or so in about 10 miles - give or take.
Then it looks like it combines with San Pedro Road and has both names.
It swings north to meet Casacabel Road which you take south to Pomerene Road into Benson.
On paper / computer screen it looks like a great daytrip for us but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts.
Thanks.
