RE: Best gas card

Penfed limits you to 12 transactions per day. OK for buying gas, but not for a day of shopping.
That must be some awesome day(s) of shopping!!!!
well, we only go to town once a week, and are still finishing out new house, so the cards get a workout..
And then.................There's Quartzsite. :)

RE: Low angle solar performance

If azimuth is directly at the sun, the output of a panel changes with the cosine of the incident angle. If the sun is hitting the panel at an angle of 0 deg, the cosine of 0 is 1. That means you multiply the rating of the panel by 1 to get its output.
If the angle is 45 deg, the cosine of 45 is .7, so the output is 70%.
And so forth. A panel puts out its rated power under ideal conditions, but his gives you an idea of the importance of tilt. Tilting doubles my output in December.

RE: Max tire pressure vs Load on tires

I always follow the tire load chart. The tough part is knowing the load on my cargo trailers.
I may have to make a chart of spring sag vs load so I know the load at any time. Like a Plimsoll line on a boat.

RE: Soldered terminals

Just to throw this out. I have seen soldered connections on older certified aircraft and built my own airplane but the rules are different for home builts. Would be interested in seeing the regs on not using solder connections on aircraft for accuracy.
I learned when CAM-18 was the manual. Now it is Part 43, and I am long retired. I have Windows 8, and can't view my old .pdf files easily, but HERE is a snippet. Go to page 19 (number at bottom of page) and you will see "Avoid use of solder to attach bonding jumpers. Clamps and screws are preferred."
Other examples abound.
The whole deal is always that solder makes the wire inclined to develop a stress point right where the stiff solder meets the soft and wiggly copper.
In a lifetime as a airline avionics tech, I saw only a few soldered connections. They were always where there was not room for a crimped terminal, as in a pickle switch in a yoke.

RE: Residential refrigerator in now time to buy inverter

I installed a Samsung RF197 a month ago, and purchased a Xantrex ProWatt 1000 watt pure sine inverter. I got from a vendor on EBay for $263 free shipping. The inverter is powering the refrigerator all of the time. The current draw of the Samsung, measured with a peak-reading true RMS ammeter, shows 12 amps instantaneously on compressor start, which drops to 1.3 amps, decreasing to around 1.0 amp after about a minute. Defrost cycle draws 3.6 amps for about 15 minutes. Multiply by 10 to get the 12 volt draw into the inverter.
I would use caution with disabling the defrost cycle. These modern refrigerators are designed for very high efficiency, and rely upon a frost-free evaporator coil. Any frost on the coil will increase compressor run time and more than eliminate any power savings.
I have found that the refrigerator will easily run overnight from two group 24 deep cycle batteries, rated at 75 ah each. I got 16 hours run time while testing.
Good info. Thank you.
Wow! Big fridge.
How often does the defrost cycle do its 15 minute cycle?
At the end of the 16 hours run time you got, what was the battery SOC? Or SG? or standing voltage?

RE: Soldered terminals

Solder can get brittle and the wire can break just before it enters the connector. Solder is not recommended on aircraft by the FAA.

RE: Opinions on electric heaters.

We like an electric heater with three heat settings, two or three fan speeds and a thermostat. This allows it to have very high, forceful output on cold mornings and put out gentle heat on a soft fan setting when temps are higher and only a little heat is needed.

RE: Bridgestone Tires?

Been using Bridgestone R250F series load range "G" tires on our coach ...... outstanding tires no problems whatsoever.
Presently, Bridgestone is the only tire I feel comfortable using on our coach.
Same here. ZERO trouble.
I will say their ride is a little firmer, but that could be because the load rating (in pounds) is pretty high for our coach. I am willing to have a rougher ride for a good safety margin.

RE: Costco vs Sams Club 6V Golf Cart Batteries

Local TX Sams, Energizer is JCI, IIRC the Duracell (north east states) are East Penn (Deka)
These days, the label on a product reflects only the company marketing them, and has little or no relation to the manufacturer. and who markets what changes often.
I can remember 15 years ago when Costo GC batteries were identical to Trojan. Same color, same mold.

RE: Wheel bearings

While I would not pack the cavity full of grease either, I dont understand how it could be really, really bad. I would think there would be millions of boat trailers in a ditch? On a boat trailer, it's done to help prevent water intrusion but they are packed full none the less.
Yeah, Good Point.

RE: battery life

Lots of variables here, outside temperature/wind, RV quality of insulation/double or single pane windows, number/age of batteries. But generally a good double set of batteries should get you through one night, then you charge up for the next.
Yes.
I would add that the batteries should not be below 40-50% SOC in the morning for best battery life (in years). If they are below that, you should consider more battery capacity.

RE: Struts to hold bed up for storage

On mine, I set up a bathroom scale to push up at the same location the struts would. I measured the force to lift the bed, divided by two, and ordered a pair the size under from McMaster.

RE: Residential refrigerator in now time to buy inverter

I am planning to buy a pure sine wave inverter from home depot. It is rated for 1000 watts with 2000 surge. It was highly recommended by all that had bought it and also recommended here. My refrigerator is rated at 2.6 amps and 17 amps locked rotor.
So all advice will be greatly appreciated.

RE: LT Tires Max pressure tongue label or sidewall?

If each tire is rated for 2156 lbs, four of them is 8624.
With a GVWR of 10,400 lbs, I would have to have a tongue weight of 1776 lbs.
That's a lot of weight on the ball back there.
Add the fact that the tires are Chinese, things are getting scary.

Iron Springs through Skull Valley is easier driving then White Spar (89), but the road is torn up with roadblocks and single lane traffic Mon Thurs. And Skull Valley to Kirkland has deputies running speed traps.
