RE: My Anniversary

Just wanted to let you know this marks my 20th anniversary of giving up work---and I'm only 57. I didn't start RVing until a couple of years later. I guess that means you haven't retired, you just stopped working at 37 and you're still on the payroll??? Must be a government job like the one I had. Just kidding -kinda.

RE: Getting ready to buy a used Jayco 31FS

If you wire the money to THEIR BANK then what iron-clad guarantee do you have that they will use this money to pay off the loan on the RV? Once it is in their account they can do whatever they want with it. Also, how do you know for sure that they can make up the difference and pay off the loan even if they use your money? The ONLY safe way to do this is to go with them to the lienholder and see that they personally pay off the note and then have the title put in your name. If the lienholder is somewhere far away that may not be practical or even possible. Even if the sellers are honest people this is a risky proposition at best. As others have said the lienholder will NOT release the title until the note is paid in full.

RE: Vinyl molding

I have 2006 Jayco Granite Ridge 2900, the vinyl molding on ours comes loose at the turn where the Ford cutaway van cab meets the overhand above the cab. I've just been tucking it back in after every trip. I have nowhere to tuck mine in. It is about a one inch wide vinyl strip that is taped over the seam where the back cap meets the sidewall. The vinyl strip has two very narrow strips of two sided tape which sticks it to the surface, but the tape has weathered and lost its "stickiness" so it comes loose easily. Looking for a solution to re-stick it that is better than the standard foam two sided tape which doesn't hold up and is too wide to begin with. I am going to order some of the Eternabond two sided tape and give it a try unless someone has a better suggestion.

RE: Vinyl molding

If I am not wrong, eternabond makes a double sided tape that should work just fine. It comes in different widths so it may be something you can use without having to cut it down. Go online and do a search on eternabond tape. It is pretty expensive compared to other stuff, but this stuff works great and will last a lifetime. Good luck You're right, I checked and they do make different sizes of double sided tape. Looks like that may be a good solution. Thanks for the input.

Vinyl molding

Having a problem with the vinyl molding on my Jayco Granite Ridge coming loose. This is about 1 inch wide and covers the vertical seams near the rear of the unit. It seems to be attached with 2 narrow strips of double-sided foam tape. Anyone encountered this problem? Before I go to the camping store to look for this tape I would like to know how you handled it. I have seen this tape before at Lowe's etc. but I would have to cut it myself into very thin strips unless I get some "custom made" at the camping store. Don't know if any other kind of adhesive or caulk might work better.

RE: water heater

If you mean by removing the plug, I have never drained it! I guess if you live in Florida you don't have to worry about winterizing it, but I still think it is a good idea to drain the water heater at least annually and wash out any "sediment" or other gunk that may have accumulated unless you use it all the time. If you use it frequently it will stay flushed out on its own. I think it would have to sit unused for a very long time to really cause a serious problem.

RE: '12 Aspect, bottom slides seals missing? (can see outside)

In addition to looking for another dealer, I would immediately contact the manufacturer about this. This is obviously a HUGE safety issue that must be corrected as soon as possible. What if the detector failed to warn her? Before it left the next dealership after they worked on it, I would make sure they tested it with the generator running to insure it was fixed. Let the manufacturer know about your problems with the unit and stay on top of it until it works like it's supposed to work. Let us know how it comes out, and thank you for your service.

RE: Selling on Consignment?

If and when I decide to sell my motorhome, it will most likely be on consignment. I may decide to try it on craigslist for a short time, but I have tried selling trucks a couple of times and it can be a hassle. Lots of scammers, "low-ballers" and e-mailers asking "is it still available" etc. Plus do you really want people coming to your house or having to meet complete strangers in a parking lot somewhere? The obvious main advantage in craigslist is you get to keep all the money as opposed to paying a commission. But how many people have the cash to pay the price without going thru some kind of lengthy loan process? The one time a while back that I checked on selling my MH on consignment I was told that I could tell them what I wanted to "clear" and they would add their commission on top of that, arrange my payoff, arrange financing for the new buyer and handle all the paperwork. Plus they get a large amount of traffic, people looking specifically for what you have to sell and you don't have to arrange your schedule around a potential buyer. Many more pros than cons if you do your homework beforehand and make sure you understand all the details. Good luck.

RE: 12v Impact Wrenches

Does anyone use a 12v impact wrench on their rig? I'm thinking about getting one from Amazon for about $50.00. It is supposed to have 240 f/lbs of torque but is that strong enough to take off the lugs on a class c dually? Tnx Probably not. Even air-powered impacts (depending on quality) have a hard time. It seems these ratings for foot pounds of torque are inaccurate or outright fabrications in some cases. As others have suggested, at LEAST 18 volts would have a better chance. In my opinion better to spend more money and be satisfied than $50 for something that probably won't work for your purposes. Over the years I have had 4 different air impacts that were rated about the same torque, and they were NOT equal in actual use, hence my statement above. I suspect the battery powered would also vary depending on the manufacturer.

RE: One way to stop catalogs

If you file a forwarding with the USPS, won't they forward everything including the few pieces of mail you still want delivered such as perscriptions? Yes I know we can pick them up on the road but the insurance company gives us the best discounts if they're mailed to us. Bill Unless the rules have changed since I retired several years ago, the answer is no, they will NOT forward everything. First class mail will be forwarded free of charge. Packages will be forwarded "postage due" unless the sender pays first class postage on them. So called "junk" mail WILL NOT be forwarded but the sender may request your forwarding address and begin sending them to your new address. That is where the term "address correction requested" on some mail pieces comes from. Newspapers and most magazines will be forwarded "postage due" for a short time also. The best way to stop "unwanted" mail other than the above posts suggested is to deal with EACH mailer individually because the Post Office MUST deliver the mail as addressed unless a forwarding order is provided. Dealing with each mailer individually can be a frustrating experience to say the least.

RE: Awning question what is too much wind

Like many other RV topics, the answer usually is more of a personal preference than specific information. For instance, I tend to get a little "paranoid" about my awning. When we first started camping we would hang lights on it etc. but a middle-of-the night thunderstorm changed my mind about leaving it open. Going outside in your BVD's after midnight is the kind of excitement I can do without. Now I bring in the awning anytime we leave the campsite, and usually at night unless there is no chance of wind or storms. As far as wind speed, I just keep an eye on it and if it starts flopping around too much I bring it in. In my case probably anything over 20MPH would be enough to roll it up. Others tie their awnings down with all kinds of contraptions but I would rather not worry about it and just bring it in until things calm down. Again, personal preference and comfort level which varies from one person to another.

RE: E450 Lube-Oil-Filter Notes

Dennis, I'm not sure the manual covers it. If they do, not well. I tried to look up fluid type/amount and found nothing. Mine is a 2004. I will check the owner's manual and see if there is any information in there about this. Thanks.

RE: E450 Lube-Oil-Filter Notes

I shoulda mentioned - BE SURE the Gasket comes off WITH the old filter and doesn't stay stuck to the engine! This one hasn't happened to me, but it's happened to others and it's an awful mess. You're right, nothing really special. I thought mentioning the wrench sizes might help somebody. I don't know how many E450 owners are aware of that parking brake fluid. I would NOT have been but somebody once mentioned it here and I thought it deserved a BUMP. From what I hear the repairs are very expensive. Was NOT aware of the parking brake fluid. I guess I need to read my owner's manual, huh? Anyway, thanks for the good information and I will check it out soon.

RE: Slide Storage, in or out

Probably more of a personal preference than anything else. I have not seen anything in my owners manuals about it for the 2 fivers and one Class C we have owned over the years. I would recommend whichever way you store it to activate the slideout occasionally to keep everything "lubed" and seals intact etc. Personally I keep my slides in to protect the top of the slide from moisture, debris etc. and possible damage to slide topper from wind, more for peace of mind than anything else. Seems it would be more protected in than out.

RE: Dreaded Yellow Residue

As I understand it, any yellow residue indicating a fridge problem would only show up in the OUTSIDE service compartment, not inside the refrigerator itself. While you obviously have something wrong with your refrigerator not cooling, I don't think the yellow residue inside the fridge has anything to do with it. Probably just something that spilled out while traveling etc.

RE: You can can dry camp at Walmart for free.

ALWAYS reply to "do a search". No sense being helpful when you can be sarcastic or rude, right? . Apparently there are more ego points in sarcasm or derailing a thread than being helpful, and you actually lose points by moving on. Good point(s)!!!

RE: You can can dry camp at Walmart for free.

The point I was trying to make (obviously not very well) was that there seems to be a few folks on here who would rather belittle others than to be helpful, that's all. If they don't want to take the time to answer the question, why take the time to say "do a search" which in many cases has already been done. OK I'm outta here.

RE: You can can dry camp at Walmart for free.

I have a great idea. No matter what the question is, let's ALWAYS reply to "do a search". There is no question. But that doesn't stop someone from saying "do a search" does it?

RE: You can can dry camp at Walmart for free.

I have a great idea. No matter what the question is, let's ALWAYS reply to "do a search". Since every question has already been answered at least once, then the search will reveal the answer and there will be no need for anyone to help anyone else find anything. Of course that would take the pleasure out of trying to be helpful but so what? No sense being helpful when you can be sarcastic or rude, right? Seriously, sometimes I hesitate to even ask a simple question because I am too "thin skinned" to be subjected to ridicule. Like someone else said earlier, if you don't want to deal with whatever topic the thread contains, then MOVE ON.

RE: Norcold refrigerator Problems?

So far, so good. Checked the temps today and they are holding in a good range for both freezer and fridge. I will keep an eye on them for the next couple of days prior to our trip. Thanks for all the information.
