RE: Snakes

I am sure that you are aware that excessive fear of anything is a phobia. "Excessive" is defined by the extent to which that fear keeps a person from participating in "normal" activities. If the person who has the phobic reaction wants or needs to do something that may be threatening, they can chose to seek out assistance in desensitizing themselves. For example, years ago I did excercises to help me with fear of flying because I needed to fly in my job. On the other hand, I have never worried about desensitizing to my fear of close spaces, I just avoid them. Snakes are probably the most common phobia found in human beings but most urban dwellers do just fine. For those who have a real desire to hike or explore the out-of-doors, it can be very difficult. Cognitive therapy directed at the specific fear can also be helpful. lizzie

RE: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......

You folks are giving me the "hurry up and get there itch". We are in Blanding UT and have reservations in Sparks, NV on Thursday. We won't start True North for another 10 days. Please leave some beautiful scenery for us! lizzie

RE: Chaco Canyon well worth the drive!

The campgound at Chaco is lots of fun because everyone there drove that road and has stories to tell. It is lovely in the evening as everyone walks about sharing what they did that day. It reminded me of the way camping used to be.lizzie

RE: Chaco Canyon well worth the drive!

It is 21 miles from Highway 550 to the Park and 13 miles of it is unpaved. It is a wide road and is sandy. It is like a washboard in spots and can be bone-jarring. I understand that when it rains it is so slick you need to just stop and wait for it to dry. We traveled from 5 to 30mph. We did not get much dust inside but of course the exterior is filthy. On the trip in, I had one cabinet come undone (paper goods) and some stuff placed on the floor slid around. I was more careful this morning and nothing shifted coming out. There were two 25' TT's and a mid-sized Class A in the CG. They both said they did not have problems...just took it slow. We were prepared for a two hour drive so were pleased that it went so well. lizzie

Chaco Canyon well worth the drive!

Many thanks to all who encouraged us to dare the road into Chaco Canyon. It was well worth it! I called the Park from Bernalillo on Monday morning and the ranger said he thought we would be ok and that the campground had not been filling up. It took us just under an hour to go from Highway 550 to the Park. We lost the top to the battery box but I saw it go and we were able to recover it. Spending two nights in the canyon was magical. The NHP is trying or a Dark Night site designation and they (very nicely) discourage using more light than is needed. Since generators cannot be run after 8 pm, it is stunning at night. I am happy to report that every ranger we encountered was pleasant and helpful. We tow a 22’ TT with our GMC Sierra 4x4 but there were large TT’s in the campground as well as a Class A. No potable water but they do have flush toilets.

RE: US 550 Albuquerque to Durango

We were at Santa Rosa SP last night. It is very nice and only cost $14.00. We are at the KOA at Bernalillo now and it is fine for just traveling through. Not our usual cup of tea but we had business in Albuerque and needed a place for one night. lizzie

RE: On the Road with "Roll Call Alaska 2013"......

We left NC last Saturday but had to "detour" through Dothan AL. Left there on Tuesday a.m. traveling west on I-10. We left I-10 at Lafayette LA, took I-49 and US 71/59 to Van Buren AR to intersect with I-40. We are now at Foss Lake SP west of Oklahoma City. Weather has been good (rained last night). All is well. lizzie

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

Great idea Janet. I will watch for the blog. We are on I-40, at Foss Lake SP in OK. We have our signs on the TT and have had some comments. Last night we met an Alaska-bound couple at Queen Wilhelmina SP in AR but it was raining so hard we didn't get to talk. They are two sites down from us here! They are not on the "Roll Call" and are planning to go to Yellowstone and up through Montana. We will continue toward Albuquerque tomorrow. Keep a look out! lizzie

RE: Albany GA - Devencrest Travel Park?

Like robsouth, we don't like the looks of Devencrest but have stayed at Sugar Mill Plantation many times. We were snowed out on our way home to NC from Florida in Jan of 2011 and stayed there for four days. Not much to do but it was safe and comfortable. lizzie

RE: Coral Hospitality will take over 5 Georgia State Parks

I am so sorry to hear this. Lake Lanier Islands and Stone Mountain are examples of the wonders of private management. Three of the slated parks are regular stops of ours, not so sure now. Both Alabama and Georgia have embraced the concept of state parks as "full-service resorts". Florida has resisted the attempts of several governors to move in that direction. It's all about the basic perception of the role of state parks (and $$$$$). lizzie

Suggestions about finding a 20" rim for a GMC Sierra?

Who would have thought this would be so hard to find? We are leaving for Alaska on Saturday and for the past two weeks have been searching on-line and via 'phone for a plain rim for a second spare tire for our truck. It is a 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4x4. Our "factory" spare is only 17" and we want another to back it up. The tires on the truck are 20" w/6 lugs. It is too late to have it shipped to us in NC but we will be in Reno NV for a week at the end of May and can have it shipped there. Any suggestions would be welcomed. lizzie

RE: How to enjoy packing for a trip

I don't know how to make packing enjoyable but I have learned to make it less stressful. My solution is lists and designated containers. If we have everything on the list checked off, we have everything we need. We use the same bags (Eagle Creek, Mountainsmith, and L.L.Bean)and the same Rubbermaid bins for every trip. When those are filled, we have enough. I clean out the 'fridge into a cooler and we are good to go. Fortunately I have a "staging area" in the garage and a spare bedroom so that I can keep some sort of order as we work through the process. Right now I am preparing for a three month trip to Alaska, leaving Saturday. lizzie

RE: Roll Call Alaska 2013

It is a strange spring but we are still on-track to leave NC next Saturday (May 4). Since our TT is in south Alabama, we will need to spend a few days getting it serviced and loaded for the trip. We plan to head west on I-10 on Wednesday, May 8. We will be watching the weather closely and hope to access I-40 at Ft. Smith but may go all the way to Blythe CA on I-10. We have reservations at Sparks Marina RV (near Reno,NV) on May 23rd.We have traveled to the northwest in May many times and it is best to have flexible plans. Even I-10 can have weird snowstorms and the wind can be awful. I got my signs laminated yesterday. We are almost ready to go! lizzie

RE: Canyon De Chelly tour recommendations

White water paddling season is getting off to a great start here in the mountains. Had an SUV cleaned out at a Tellico River launch area last weekend. We had ours broken into on the Chatooga 20 years ago. People are people where ever they are. When I had a convertable I never locked the doors. I'd rather folks steal stuff from off the seat than cut my top. You can learn a lot from chatting from the locals and still keep an eye on your stuff. lizzie

RE: Canyon De Chelly tour recommendations

I would ride with the guide. It is amazing in the Canyon and you will want to be sightseeing not driving. I would also advise a private guide that can spend the entire day with you, then let him/her tell you your options. It is expensive but for us it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we just ate beans for a week to pay for it. lizzie

RE: RV parking in St. Augustine, Florida ?

The shuttle bus will pick you up and deliver you to your campsite at Anastasia SP. Pick up a brochure at the Ranger Station and call them, or ask a Ranger to do so. The shuttle passes are good for 24 hours. The bus takes you to St. Augustine to meet the trolly that goes to all of the attractions and runs until about 10 p.m. at night. You can get on and off at your leisure. I can't recall the price, but it is well worth it. lizzie

RE: Buying New Travel Trailer Jayco or Z-1 Crossroads??

Ellland. Please ignore the above comment. It is not at all characteristic of posters on this forum. I think a TT would make a great guard shack or whatever else you want to do with it. We have a Crossroads Sunset Trail and it has been satisfactory. lizzie
