RE: How long does it take to wipe a hard drive?

30 seconds on my drill press... but a different situation as I wasn't trying to save it, just make it unreadable.

RE: Misdirected Search

Sounds like you've been infected. Download and run MalwareBytes to see what's up (and probably fix it).

RE: Internet service out in the boonies!

Interesting! My sister just bought a sat phone but she didn't know if it could be tethered or used as a wifi hot spot... ... Might be a nice option when the prices come down and the speed improves. You might have to wait a while for the speed of light to improve, but maybe they'll move the satellites closer! :W

RE: Cell phone tethering data usage

We find the 2 gig plan works fine when we travel for heavy email and light surfing. If you have AT&T you can bump up and down at will and if you do select their 5 gig plan you get to turn your phone into a hotspot without adding FoxFi or PdaNet.

RE: GM bringing 4G wireless into vehicles by next year

I think people tend to forget that there is a whole world of people who haven't a clue about what an mifi is but who would be really happy if their kids could hop in the back seat and amuse themselves on their whatever-pad no matter what the cost.

RE: Apple Discloses Widest Cyber Attack of Macs to Date

And even more embarrassing is that the attack happened to a number of Apple employees. I wonder if they felt safe enough on their OS to not disable the Java plugin along with those on other platforms. While the blame for the ability to perform the exploit lays on the shoulders of Oracle, it appears that the underlying post-exploit code is now being developed for the Apple OS and Unix/Linux variants.

Is there a free option of this new joint release or do I need to finally fork over a few $$$ for FoxFi/PDANet+?

Try this. Read here:After trying 3 or 4 of these "hard reset" methods I was left wondering exactly which printer model this work on. Certainly not mine!

RE: Defective ink cartridge

I buy new then refill at Costco until I get the error message which is caused by HP dating the cartridges. Then I buy new and repeat the process. I never had a problem with a Costco refill.

RE: Java

I decided to completely uninstall it. Have had no indication that I needed it so far. It also freed up some space on my SSD c drive.
If something comes up that needs it,...it's easy enough to download and re-install.
So far I don't miss it.Same here. I have encountered only one application where I miss it, and they offer a PDF alternative.

RE: Generator to power house

Unless I'm reading it wrong 230.2(A)2 mentions "Emergency power" as an exception.
Dave
No, there is no "emergency" exception to allow backfeeding under ANY circumstances because it kills people.Who said anything about Backfeeding? I'm not backfeeding the grid if I am disconnected from it - and if I tried to my generator would blow a breaker instantly due tot he load. As someone else mentioned, It's amazing how our entire island managed to survive Sandy with not a single lineman (or homeowner) suffering an electrical-related injury in spite of generators running everywhere.

RE: Generator to power house

Houses are often supplied with two sources of power such as grid and solar. Our solar has an automatic disconnect but I a friend's system in CA had a manual disconnect wih "For use by the power company only" printed on it.

RE: Generator to power house

I have often wondered why not just flip the main as I do any time I'm working in the breaker box. I picked up a 4kw generator from Harbor Freight for $260 that puts out 2 120vac legs and one 240 30 amp. I'm wiring a cable right now from the genset 240 to my boat's 50 amp 125/250 so I can charge the battery banks while out of the water. I figure my next project is figuring out now to run my house furnace and fridges. Turning off the main and jumping to the panel the way professional floor sanders do seems like a possibility.

RE: finding & downloading a old program

I don't know about Win8 support, but all you need is to copy FreeCell.exe to the new PC and, in the old days, you put cards.dll in \windows\system. It looks like now you would put CardGames.dll in \windows\system32. You should be able to find both of these on your XP system. FreeCell.exe can go anywhere since it is an executable. The DLL will need to be in the right place for DLLs and FreeCell will complain is it can't find the DLL.
