RE: internet service

The Sprint $15 may have no limit, I do not know about this plan. Other that that the AT&T iPhone plan - as far as I can tell - is the only other one out there that is listed without a 5 gig cap. Of course you are not supposed to tether with the iPhone so technically AT&T has a cap on all plans for use with a PC just like the other carriers. Dave

RE: Kindle Free Books --- Any Catch?

What is the quality of the copy like? (misspelling errors & wrong words) I have been downloading from ereader.com for years into my pda and the quality sometimes leaves a lot to be desired. Guess they are getting more & more from overseas. From what I have read I think it is identical to the paper-based product. Books are no longer transcribed as the quality of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) with scanners has come very far so, they are just scanned into electronic format. Dave

RE: Kindle Free Books --- Any Catch?

The catch on the free Kindle books is that most of 'em are older books where copyright has expired. Here's the last few free Kindle books I downloaded: "The Pawn" - Steven James - Copyright 2007 "Black Sea Affair" - Don Brown - Copyright 2008 "The Templar Legacy" - Steve Berry - Copyright 2006 "Med Ship" - Murray Leinster - Copyright 2002 "Hostage" - Don Brown - Copyright 2005 Not an expired copyright in the bunch... DutchDutch - Is there a good way of finding free books on Amazon other than hit or miss searching? Thanks, Dave

RE: Please clear up Kindle question

I suspect I received the update last night. This morning the Kindle wouldn't come out of sleep mode so I turned it off and back on for the first time ever. There is no release version I can find, but the 'Update Kindle' is greyed out so I guess I need to try reading a PDF file to see if it updated or just needed a reboot after being on for a month. Dave

RE: connected to internet via samsung phone

Try starting IE and going to Tools->Options, click the Connections tab and make sure Never Dial a Connection is selected. Dave

RE: Is it awkward to use a large monitor with a small laptop?

I actually built a stand to hold the laptop up about 4 inches up so that the two monitors are able to interact as I slide something across the desktop from one to the other. It works great with the wireless keyboard and mouse. Dave

RE: Please clear up Kindle question

With a Kindle: (a) Can I download e-books from Amazon VIA THE INTERNET to my computer and then transfer them to the reader? Well I do not have a Kindle.. Just Kindle forPC. But I believe you can from reading the documentation on the PC Yes you can simply by plugging your Kindle into your PC. (b) Can e-books in non Kindle formats be purchased from non Amazon sources and then be converted (on my computer) to Kindle format? No clue.. But you can download the free Kindle for PC so you can read 'em for free on your Poor Comptuers. Not sure about buying but you can get them for free. (c) Must e-books in Kindle format be purchased from Amazon? NO, Project Gutenburg (A free book service) gives away books in the "Mobi" format (Moblie) and those are compatable with the Kindle (at least with Kindle for PC that I have and others with the hand held say it works with theirs too) Very true - Mobi-format, which is the format my library carries, works on a Kindle. I do not have cell service so must be able to use the Internet. Would like to buy a reader for my wife. Process must be easy. I do not believe you need cell service.. I believe the Kindle kind of has it 'Built in' and the cost is included in the price. However.. You will need to verify that (other posters please comment)Exactly. The cell service is built-in and free. They call it Whispernet. If you are not in range of a Sprint tower, you simply download to your PC and transfer it or, if you have your Kindle plugged in, there is no reason you can not tell Amazon to save the download directly on the Kindle since it looks just like another disk drive. RE: Please clear up Kindle question

Kindle also handles Mobi format which is very popular on non-Amazon sites and public libraries. You can download the free MobiCreator tool and create Mobi-format books from PDF and other formats and then copy them to your Kindle. Your cell question has been answered - if you are near a Sprint tower you can use it automatically for free. If not, you can download anything you want from amazon or any other e-book source and then drag-and-drop it to your Kindle once you plug it into a USB port on your computer. However you do it you are NOT tied to Amazon for books - there are a number of other excellent sites such as manybooks.net and maybe your public library system or coop from which you can easily download books. Hope this helps! Dave

RE: New Router Install Problems

Are you sure you connected the WAN port from the router to your cable modem and not one of the other ports? Also, did you power off the cable modem, power it back on, and then do the same for the router? Dave

RE: AT&T Tethering Speed Issues

So the old phone works but the new one does not? I would check for a new driver from the manufacturer. Dave

RE: AT&T tethering connection?

I had multiple profiles because I have tethered through a number of technology changes at Cingular then AT&T. Dave

RE: Barnes & Noble Nook sold out!

Plus I can read a real book longer than one of the electronic ones since I can't stay on the computer for long periods of time. And what about the bright sun? It would make it impossible to read unless you moved. If you think those are genuine concerns, you've obviously never seen a Kindle, Sony, Nook, or any other current technology ebook reader. It's too funny how people think of these! Obviously the manufacturers need to do some educating - or rather better marketing! Dave

RE: Most reliable laptops?

There are a few options to clean things up. Dave Thanks for the help. I did the Google search on all of my Processes in the Task Manager and found none that I would want to stop. Perhaps some could be disabled but there were none that would never want to use at some time. I will just keep a large RAM and let these processes hang on. Looking at the CPU usage of the processes shows that the idle ones have zero CPU usage. Glad you were able to wade through the information and learn what is running on your machine. I agree - get more memory and, as long as programs aren't eating up cpu cycles, let the do their thing. Dave

RE: iPhone battery life - is it just me?

maybe the nearest tower had problems, this would result in more power useage, from sending a stronger signal or polling the tower more often to maintain the signal might have been tower damage in one of the recent storms ?I thought thata tower issue was the most likely, but the shortened life started when I was in NJ and continued for 4 weeks after we arrived on Nantucket. We are still here and all of a sudden recharging has gone to every 4th day. Maybe it was some weird coincidence of tower problems - that is the only thing that makes sense. Hopefully when we head back to NJ it will stay on its 4 day cycle - I'm getting spoiled! Dave

RE: Kindle Free Books --- Any Catch?

If you are off in your trailer, how do you download something? The Kindle uses the Sprint network and you simply download over that using the included web browser. I put my Sony away, and still go to the used book store, as I can still get paper backs much cheaper than I can books for the e-reader. I thought one of the reasons you bought a Sony was because they include a free library of current books. :? More and more libraries are offering e-books of current publications just as they do with the paper-based versions. There is a service providing this and a number of NJ libraries are joining it. The best part is you don't have to be near your library to get a book - they are accessible anywhere. Dave

RE: iPhone battery life - is it just me?

Thanks for the ideas. Funny thing is I have it set to pull mail from 2 accounts every 15 minutes, leave 3G on, leave wifi search on, screen nice and bright, and tomorrow will be day 4 on this charge. Very weird how it comes and goes. Maybe it'll just stay this way instead of going back to the 36 hours charge cycle! :) Dave
