RE: IPhone with AT&T

The iPhone killer is here......The Droid is a better OS and with a much better company. Read all the reviews and you will see why they are calling the Droid the iPhone killer. Ordered our 1st Motorola Droid today, 2nd to come as soon as contract allows.
You seem to use 'Droid' two different ways. Droid is not an operating system, it is a phone made by Motorola that uses Google's Android operating system. Which company are you saying is better, Motorola or Google?
You are reading different reviews than I am. Although most have called it close, most have said that iPhone is still ahead. I've read a few that favored Droid, but most of them compared against iPhone 2.0 or 3.0.
I am a Verizon user and, for a number of reasons, will not switch to AT&T. I have been looking for an iPhone "killer" and have tried many of the Verizon phones. I've had the opportunity to use the Droid and iPhone side-by-side. In my opinion, Droid isn't there, yet.
Ahh, but what about the Google Nexus One. Will they sell that phone?

RE: PC performance myths

It probably wouldn't help 1492, but it would be nice if MS would switch to a more modern, journaled file system.

RE: SOLVED XP intermittent boot problem

Having done all that you have done, I would use the Device Manager to uninstall the adapter and then to check for hardware changes to reinstall.

RE: PC performance myths

1492 writes "Even Microsoft recommends defragging your drives to improve performance on media systems."
Perhaps you could provide a DIRECT LINK to MS website that backs up your statement?
Beginning with XP there is no need to manually defrag. XP will automatically defrag the drive when the system is not busy. Usually will start the defrag after your screen saver goes active.
By the way, defragging only affects HARD DRIVE ACCESS, in other words it does not increase the speed of a program unless the program is attempting to read or write to the HD.
By far most speed issues come from folks allowing too many tray programs load and run. Often times these programs will use processor clock cycles even when not being directly used or needed.
Other slow downs which are more connected with internet clutter on your HD are another major issue. Clean the cookies, temperary internet files and other clutter, use Adware/Spyware removal tools on a regular basis.
http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx
See number 2, which includes:
When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals—monthly is optimal—there are other times you should run it too, such as when:
You add a large number of files.
Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.
You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

There are products made to reduce the glare of glossy screens. Here is one source.

RE: “Don’t be a Lurker” pop up very annoying

...
I remove the whole group from time to time just to clean out places like banks, etc., so it does get scoured from time to time.
I remove cookies every day, but I leave the Open Roads Forum portal cookies, plus a couple of others.

RE: “Don’t be a Lurker” pop up very annoying

Wow...why do people complain about old news? The "Lurker Pop-Up" has been on the site at least since January of 2009 (that's the first mention I can find doing a forum search.) You would think those who claim to be regular users would be used to it by now.
Also, what's so difficult about either,
1.) Logging in before browsing? It requires the entry of what...10-20 keystrokes.
2.) Clicking the X or close button on the pop-up? "Such an annoyance. Such a pain. So much hassle..."
So little time, so much to complain about.I spent a lot of time setting up firefox to auto log-on to any site I frequent, and using ONE password for the whole kit-n-kaboodle. NOW I need to enter my RV.net passwords manually once again just to look at a link (had to look it up once because I never use it). Yes, it's an annoyance, a pain and a hassle.
Have you tried leaving the cookies for the different portals on your computer?

RE: Slow page loading

I have the same problem on my Linux machine running Mozilla browser. I thought it was related to Linux but I guess not. My xp machine with Mozilla opens fast. Other web sites open fast on the Linux machine so I guess it is this site is optimized for windows. Double clicking does seem to speed things up.
I suggest you read this thread.

RE: Transfer of .pps Photos Possible?

Putting a photo, any photo you you see posted legally on the web, and putting it on your personal desktop background at home is not illegal. Period! End of Argument. So why did my post get deleted?
Again for those that missed it:
-Put your cursor on the photo you are looking at
-Hit right mouse button to get pop-up window.
-Select " Set as Desktop Background"
-Done
PS: If someone chooses to keep deleting then I will choose to keep posting until the cows come home.
Your post wasn't deleted. You didn't post in this thread, you posted it here.

RE: Dish and locals?

...
Ya gotta love a guy that tells another person that what they are doing is illegal and then goes on to tell the world what THEY themselves are doing ILLEGALLY.
Since the prohibition is on the provider, I don't see that he has done anything illegal. Since there are two providers, I don't know how the law applies to them.

RE: Dish and locals?

... DISH, was a bit free with the waivers on this and as a result was sued by the networks, Dish reached agreement with all the networks save one, Had FOX joined in the agreement the case would have been withdrawn but since Fox at the time and DirecTV shared a major stockholder.. That did not happen.
...
We've been down this road before. I believe your position is that it was a civil case and that if an agreement was reached, there would have been no case before the court, hence no injunction against Dish.
As I have told you in the past, the three intellectual property lawyers, one of which is a daughter-in-law, I discussed this with, disagree. All said that once the judge had issued his finding of fact, the injunction was mandatory, because of the unusual language use in the statue. (Instead of the usual, "the court may impose," the statue says, "the court shall impose."}
The Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeal told the judge he had no discretion. The judge's final ruling said that the law did not allow him to accept a settlement, even if one were reached.
And finally, in Echostar's "concession" press release, they acknowledge their regret that the judge had no discretion.
