RE: Some random questions driving through Canada to Alaska

Thanks all. Checked with our credit union and was advised they don't charge a coversion fee, and they have no problems with their debit/ credit card being used anywhere internationally, as it's through MasterCard. DWs credit card charges 3%. Figure I'll exchange some cash as soon as I cross the border. Do provincial park CGs and commercial CGs both take credit cards? I'm assuming there are places which don't and plan to have enough cash. Appreciate the tip on airplane mode for the mobile units. Hadn't though of it. Figured we'd clear the food out prior to crossing borders, just in case. Are external fuel cans a problem? Didn't see any mention of it on the gov. website, but thought I'd ask...

RE: Coach-Net, Good Sam or "Other" in Alaska?

Do any of these road services work in Canada, as well?

Excellent information, and it's really appreciated. Going to save that link.

Some random questions driving through Canada to Alaska

1. Do most provincial campgrounds have dump stations? We are going to try to camp mostly without electric, hookups or water connections . What about points to take on water? I figure the commercial parks have dump stations and potable water, but we're operating on a budget. 2. Currently, what's an average price for diesel fuel in Canada? Alaska? 3. Leaving in three weeks and still haven't decided handling finances (conversion). Figuring I'll just use cash in Canada. Or Chase Credit card. 4. Cell phone/ data. I figure I'll spend a week out and a week back in Canada. Just won't use cell phone or 3G data except for emergencies (AT&T cell). Only use iPads at free wireless locations (eateries or possible commercial CG) Any thoughts or concerns about these strategies? Thanks in advance.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

Just need to get used to the wider body. No real downside. If you're used to a TC, the dually shouldn't be much different, I'd think.

RE: Adding a rear "porch" to TC

Go to the TC university thread. There are several listed there.

*jeesh* Now someone has to tell the one about the bear saying grace... These jokes are older than ME! *grin*

RE: Bears and RV

We've learned a lot from the thread. DW had been reading a lot, and she got concerned and was going a bit overboard - wondering whether soap and toothpaste in the RVs bathroom needed to sealed in ziplock bags, because of their odor. She didn't want bears breaking into the RV to get the toothpaste...

Front tire mount

A search yielded no results, though I figured the question had to come up before, but if anyone knows of a good link, it would be appreciated: Want to move the spare tire on our truck to the front hitch receiver using a Curt carrier. A question has come up about the possibility of a diesel engine overheating due to the spare tire blocking the airflow. Has anyone had experience with a front mounted carrier, and were any problems encountered? Appreciate any experiences...

RE: Bears and RV

Thanks for the link. I imagine the biggest problem from people are not the residents of an area, but the tourists passing through. Seems like the safest thing I can do in a campground is camp away from other campers lol. Again, appreciate all the time people took to reply. I think we have a realistic idea of the situation, now.

RE: Bears and RV

I admit to be being a bit bothered by the BC Park sign: bears are dangerous, but they are what they are, and to be destroyed because of the carelessness or stupidity of people... Does it happen often?

RE: Bears and RV

Thanks all for the excellent information. I'm familiar with the black bears around the east, but they are fairly familiar with people. As a matter of fact, I was sleeping out in the woods and saw someone digging into our garbage pit, where we had piled some empty C ration cans. I rolled over and yelled, "Hey Marine! What are you doing in our garbage?" It looked at me quizzically, to which I responded: "Never mind! You go right ahead!" Lol

RE: Made our first reservations --call us committed

Taking our first trip to Alaska in June - we rarely make reservations, just go with the feeling. How important are reservations in Alaska and Canada for the summer?

Bears and RV

We're heading on a summer excursion to Canada and Alaska starting June. DW has been reading about techniques to keep bears away from your camp, but it mostly seems directed at backpackers and tenters. We plan to boondock a bit, and are curious about bears being attracted to cooking odors lingering inside the TC. I've no doubt one could get inside if it wished, but how concerned should we really be? Enough to do all of our cooking outdoors, a distance away from the TC? Sounds like a silly question, perhaps, but it never hurts to check with people more experienced than we. Appreciate any informed opinions.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

Look forward to meeting other TC travelers. Perhaps we could start a thread for people currently travelling in Alaska, making it possible for those who wish to meet up somewhere for a day or so.

RE: So what did you do to your Truck Camper today?

A friend of mine did the first service on the truck, and installed the air-ride bags, in cab controller, and mounted the front hitch, as well. Spent about 4 days working on it. Mounted he compressor to the frame, and even built a water tight box around it, in case we hit deep water lol. It's good to have talented friends. After the air bags settle in place with a wek of driving, I'll put the camper in the bed and begin those modificatios: back porch, upgraded battery storage, and minor interior repairs. April 26th: last work day June 1: Officially retired June 2: enroute to Alaska, then parts unknown
