RE: Curious about something...

Another technique we've used with a lot of success: When things start to get heated just back off and tell them "Okay. You do what you've gotta do and I'm gonna go do what I've gotta do." Then walk away. You may decide to call the sheriff or you may not. Usually they, or someone in their party, gets worried about what you're going to do and comes to apologize. (jo)

RE: Curious about something...

These situations are tricky (not to mention annoying). If everyone follows the rules, everyone is treated fairly. People don't have the rules memorized though. Think of campers like children. They'll do what they want until someone tells them it's against the rules. Of course they'll push back. Try to keep a sense of humor. Try to reward the good behavior, not the bad. The campground is a large area to cover and you can't spend 24 hours looking for bad behavior. That's no fun! We've had good success with a wave and a smile, as people enter and leave, and as we drive through the campground. (I like "drive through" instead of "patrol".) If someone doesn't look at you and return your wave or smile, they are the ones who aren't having fun and may need more attention. Even the good ones can't be perfect. The campfire flames up, but it will settle back down. Don't get mad and assume they'll keep it blazing. Just watch for a little bit if you're concerned about safety. If they are keeping it blazing, go over and talk to them calmly. Troublemakers don't really like you to be in their campsite, even if you are the nicest person on earth (or maybe especially). So, if you're a talker, chat with them about anything and everything including the campfire restrictions and the reasons for it. Take your time. Chat for a while. Maybe sit down. hahaha Try to stay until the fire is safe again. This technique may need a couple times during their stay to get the point across. Try to have fun with this instead of letting them get under your skin. (not as easy as it sounds I know)
Another technique, one step further in the Walmart-Greeter philosophy, is to spot the trouble before it happens. We've had groups of young people looking for a place to party for the night. You can spot them, maybe a car or two and all texting to others who will show up later. So my husband would catch them as soon as he could, before they set up camp. He'd talk to them about this being a family campground and the sheriff patrols nightly. He explained to them that there are 3 things that will invite the sheriff into your campsite: lots of cars, noise and a big campfire. And, son-of-a-gun if they didn't turn into good campers...or leave.
Then there are the ones who get angry because they have to follow the rules. I had a guy yelling at me so all around could hear him. I tried to calmly reason with him without raising my voice. That wasn't working. He just wanted the attention. So, I lowered my voice to almost a whisper. He had to come closer to me to hear. I don't even remember what I said but I could see everyone in the other campsites pay more attention too. hahaha He calmed down. I don't think I ever resolved his problem but I really didn't care if he didn't come back. I mean, why do I want to make sure that camper is happy? But at least he wasn't bothering the other campers anymore.

RE: sell fixer-upper 5er or fix it first - Oregon Coast

I like the As Is idea. We'll see if the local consignment lot will accept it.

sell fixer-upper 5er or fix it first - Oregon Coast

I am hoping for some helpful advice. The sub-floor on our large slideout needs to be rebuilt. Do I sell it as a fixer-upper or fix it first?
A couple stains on the carpet makes me think the new owner would want to refloor anyway. So I don't know if it's worth it for us to do or just sell it as is. I don't know how hard it is to replace that floor.
And, actually, I don't know why the repairman is telling us the subfloor is bad. I don't feel or see any rot. The slideout fits snug in the out position. But going in and out is a little rough and it doesn't fit tight when you pull it in. So it needs to find a permanent home and not be used for a lot of travel. It would work great as a park model.

RE: Workamping With Larger Dogs

You shouldn't have any problem. Just ask up front to be sure pets are allowed. Some FS campgrounds are in protected watersheds where pets aren't allowed. Of course, you'll be the one setting the example for good pet behavior. So find out what the pets rules are too. I know in Forest and most State campgrounds they must be on a 6' or less leash and not allowed to bark incessantly. Many places are starting to restrict aggressive breeds but yours don't fall into that category (at least the lab).

RE: Any site better than CoolWorks?

I didn't know about Cool Works. Thanks for posting. In fact, I'm going to add that to my Workamping Jobs in my Catch-All Drawer.
American Land & Leisure still has some summer openings. They manage campgrounds. You get paid and the campsite for free. Some host sites have FHU, some just have water/sewer. Check it out here: http://www.americanll.com/Current%20Openings.html

RE: Camp hosting - biggest hassle

But getting back to the drunks... Word spreads among partiers. We hosted at a campground that had been well known for partiers. There was a college within a couple hours drive. When we got our first taste of it over Memorial Weekend, the Sheriff came out and made a couple arrests and gave a few tickets. So, we put up a sign at the entrance kiosk that showed the number of arrests and number of tickets with the title of Sheriff's Scorecard. We'd increase the numbers, just a little, every week or so (whether or not anything happened). The families appreciated the extra attention. Some cars turned around and left as soon as they saw the sign. Funny, they don't read any other sign. Maybe the word Sheriff caught their attention? (jo)

RE: Camp hosting - biggest hassle

We had a camphost who handled a wild kid on a bike perfectly (imho). She'd talked to the kid, calmly, several times to try to teach him how to be a more considerate bike rider and educate him on the rules. When he refused to be trained she talked to the Dad who said "not my son!". So, the next time she caught him she confiscated his bike and told him to walk. Pretty soon the Dad came over and demanded his son's bike back. She said it's "not you sons!" :-) (jo)

RE: W-2, 1099, or what

Be sure to ask before you go to work for a private park. I've heard that some of them report the site fee as part of your income. It never hurts to ask ahead of time.

RE: Where are you working/volunteering this summer?

We're actually going to take this summer off. Turns out I can get my way by whining for a year or two. :-) We'll do it again but I just need a break from where we are. Would love to travel more though.

Where are you working/volunteering this summer?

Spring is almost here! Are you excited about your summer gig? Are going back to a favorite spot or going on to a new adventure? There are so many places to see, I'd love to hear about them all.

RE: Free Camping

Sounds like a nice gig. But could I get you to explain a little more about cleaning the restrooms once during the 3 day shift? I'm used to cleaning restrooms 3 times a day. Maybe it's not a very busy park or you have another cleaning crew? Or you have extremely clean guests?
thanks,
jo

RE: Pacific Northwest Ideas for Summer 2013

I bet you'd love Cape Perpetua Campground! It is 30 minutes south of Newport and 20 minutes north of Florence. It is in the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, which has 26 miles of hiking trails; from old-growth forest to tide pools at sea level. The trails are accessible from the campground and there is a Visitor Center within a moderate hiking distance. The stretch of coast between Depot Bay and Florence is the most scenic from Hwy 101 (imho). Between the campground and Florence you have lots of overlooks and several waysides to access the beaches, Sand Dunes, Sea Lion Caves, Heceta Head Lighthouse, and a mountain biking trail in Cummins Creek Wilderness Area. To the north is Yachats, Tillicum Beach (use your car pass from camping to enjoy a day on a wide, sandy, beach), Waldport (fishing and crabbing). Newport has the Aquarium and the FREE alternative is the Hatfield Marine Science Center which is like a mini-aquarium. Buy fresh seafood off the boats or you have lots of choices in restraunts in both Florence and Newport. There are a few, but very good, restraunts in Yachats and Waldport.

RE: Michigan to Sacremento and points above

Tillicum Campground is a great place to enjoy the central Oregon coast from and has access to a wide, sandy beach. It is 20 minutes south of Newport and 25 minutes north of Florence. 5 minutes from Cape Perpetua Scenic Area. The stretch of coast between Depot Bay and Florence is the most scenic from Hwy 101 (imho). Not sure when you are travelling or how old you are. But we manage the National Forest campgrounds in this area; where you can use your Senior card for a discount. We are open year-round and you don't need a reservation if you aren't travelling between mid-June through Labor Day.
