Also you don't need a card to update. I've had my unit dormant for a few weeks/months and try to hook up and it tells me conect due to security ???? all I do is call CS and tell themI need an update hit and they send it thru the satellite.
This card change is new security. I had to add a card to a receiver that never had one before.
I'm having a similar problem with my older automatic ( non-dome ) and DirecTV. It will search ... I see it peak on the signal strength, lock on ... lose that lock, then go on to search again.
There is a forum for Winegard ... what I'm reading there, and it appears to cause problems with DirecTV and Dish is that Dish has a new Satellite up there. It's # is 77 and went into service last November/December timeframe. Apparently with this new Satellite in the mix the dish(s) get confused.
My workaround for the time being is to have the signal strength on the TV ... and when it reaches a peak I try to catch it by pressing 'Off' on my automatic system.

Crazy as it sounds try this. If receiver is plugged into surge protector bypass it,At my stick house I lost a bunch of channels due to loss of signal of cer.tain transponders the dish tech came out checked out connections, lnb's etc. finally changed receiver---same problem, desperation he unplugged surge protector everything ok, a year ago I could not get a signal on my manual dish on motorhome, unpluged surge protector and no problem! The dish tech back at home said the hd receivers were "very sensitive".Whatever it worked. Thanks Dick for the suggestion, but alas, the receiver is not on any surge protected circuit. System worked fine the last weekend in November when I was at a dog show. Didn't work in January. I figured it had something to do with 6" of snow we had in December.
However, when I found the Winegard forum, someone else had the same problem. The tech who answers questions on the forum mentioned to the other poster about this Satellite 77 that was most like the culprit and that it would affect DirecTV users as well. I have also posted a question regarding the matter.
Now it may be that the newer Winegard systems are smarter than my older automatic system. I do have a work around, but it's a pain because even when I see the signal "locked" and a high strength, I can't quite catch it with my Power Off button. So it's a catch as catch can ... I've been able to 'catch' it about the 4th try each time, and the signal strength isn't as high as it could be. So far, however, it hasn't affected my viewing.
Just don't need the expense of a newer system right now.
