Does anyone have any experience towing a year 2000 vintage Ford Explorer with an electric transfer case--is there a way to put it in neutral or a kit to do so? THANKS

I have heard that there is a neutral tow kit available. I've been looking into this myself for my Y2K Explorer. You can do a search online for the kit ... very inexpensive, but I also found a thread on a forum ( sorry can't remember which one ), that said the on-board computer in the Explorer needs to be programmed by Ford for the tow kit to be active. That is probably where the expense will be. I've been meaning to stop by my local Ford dealer and get the specifics.

We've been towing our '96 Explorer that is a manual transmission right now, and it's having some mechanical issues so I wanted to check on having the Y2K adapted for towing.

Sorry I haven't been more helpful ...

Thanks, that is what I've found so far by researching the internet and you are probably right about the expense issue.

I tow a 2003 Fore Explorer 4X4 which has the tow kit installed. The kit consists of "are you ready" an indicator light that fits on the bottom of the dash to tell you the transfer case is in neutral. The other portion of the kit is having the Ford dealer re-program the ECU and affixing stickers on the drivers sun visor and under the hood that tells the Ford Mechanic that the vehicle has been retrofitted with the neutral tow kit and the vehicle might roll freely so chock the wheels.
Seriously it is an indicator light and a ECU re-program. Work great.

Cliff -

Out of curiosity ... how do you 'switch' it into neutral ? My 4X4 switch only has 3 positions ( auto / 4 high / 4 low ) ... do they add a 4th ?

For the past 6.5 years we have towed our 98 Ford explorer, 5 speed, 2wd, all 4 down with no kits or other devices on a Roadmaster Sterling tow bar. No problems so far.
Check out this site for some possible help: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//index.php
