Just crossed Arizona on our way to Indio, CA. Every rest stop was closed.., no construction, just closed. To make things worse, new ramp improvements left no room to park on the shoulders.

Dose anyone know why the rest stop are closed?

Hi Cynabar,

Have a look here:

Arizona rest areas including closures

It's all about money, of course.

Money woes

Arizona DOT posted the following:

Temporary Suspension of Operations at 13 Rest Areas Statewide

As part of a series of actions to address current budget constraints, and in an ongoing effort to preserve the most critical services and safety measures for the traveling public, the Arizona Department of Transporation (ADOT) is temporarily suspending operations at 13 of its 18 rest areas beginning the week of October 19.

It was ironic that the article in a Phoenix paper was on the same page with an article about importing fish for an urban fishing program.

This is nuts! Why are we paying higher diesel fuel taxes? What about the stimulus funds.

OK cut the amenities... just a let us have place to safely pull of the road for a few minuets.

Can we think of something better to cut in the budget?

I know where much of Arizona's state revenue goes. And I don't like it.

The funds for the re-stocking are targeted monies from the Game & Fish Department. They can't be used for any other purposes, by statute.

I understand the departmental separation, but it does show a problem with priorities. I would think that importing fish for an urban lake would be way down the list. Maybe one department got a little too much and the other didn't get enough. Of course, ADOT could be trying to make a point. I can't imagine that it costs that much to run the rest areas.

I'm reading your mind pardoner and I'm with you! You sure don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure where the cash drain is.

Worst than closing the rest Areas is the fact that the state is on the verge of being broke as is the case with several other states.
