The chassis maker specs the filter, not the engine maker. The engine maker just gives them the CFM requirements.
How much was the part? Labor?
What chassis do you have and what filter part number-- perhaps others with the same filter can tell you if this is reasonable.

I paid less than $80 for my filter and installed it myself. That way I make $150/hr!

Speedco installed my air filter for $59.99 plus tax, the cost of the filter, no additional labor. I am very satisfied with Speedco for routine annual service, at a very reasonable rate.

I have a Meridian 2004 C-7 on the Freightliner chassis and those air filters are a terror to replace. The only thing that competes with this job is the air system filter replacement, also a wrestle underneath the back end of the coach. If I remember right the engine air filter was around $85 and my auto front end alignment and brake shop helped me install the filter charging me $35 for his part. Both of us spent 30-45 minutes under the back end together wrestling that thing down and back up. Sure glad this is just a 3-4 year project.

You can see from my signature what I have.
The 1st time, I had a cat service do mine. After I saw how it was done I started doing mine. The first time I did it, it took awhile, not I am pretty good at it. Inside the rear compartment is a door. remove the screws and you now see the filter, unbolt it you have about 1 inch of play. It took longer the first time, now I am rather good.
Cat was something like $200.00, my cost was like $70.00 for the filter and a small amount of time. If you aren't signed up for tiffinrv.net, you should be. Alot of good information there.

I have a 2004 Fleetwood with a CAT C7 on a Freightliner. We have a trucking company, so I have good access to discounted parts. I shopped around and found the cheapest to be $280 and I installed it myself. It is all moulded plastic with the filter inside. I'm going to wait for the indicator to get to the red before replacing next time.

EXCEPT, that the filter elements are made of paper and degrade with time.
Three years is about the max before the glue/paper begin to break down.
Yes, yours sounds like an expensive filter, but LOTS CHEAPER than having a broken pleat in the filter cause the engine to ingest a lot of dirt and fail.

Yes, yours sounds like an expensive filter, but LOTS CHEAPER than having a broken pleat in the filter cause the engine to ingest a lot of dirt and fail. But if he keeps a close eye on that filter-minder, it will tell him that to. Far to many change air filters way before necessary.
And I've seen brand new expensive filters with broken pleats. That made me a believer in the filter-minders. Can tell if they are leaking and can tell if their plugged.
