Not sure if this has been mentioned here but just in case I got this message yesterday:

Dear Valued Customer,

Our records show that you own a Samsung television Model(s). Under a Class Action Settlement,
You might be eligible for a free repair, reimbursement of the repair costs that you have already paid, or other settlement benefits.
Please see the linked notice (www.samsung.com/capacitorsettlement) regarding the settlement.
For additional information, visit our web site www.samsung.com/capacitorsettlement, or call 888-899-7602 between 9am and 9pm EST.

Thank you
Samsung Service Team

I have a Samsung 32" LCD TV and I had to have a capacitor replaced.

Have not received such letter yet.
I wonder what they would reimburse me for since I researched the problem bought replacement capacitors (higher capacity) removed the defective ones from the power board and soldered in the replacements myself. It's been over 2 years since the DIY replacement. Knocking on wood!

Cost was less than $ 10.00 but the time spent and agonizing over the deal surely cost me something.

My Capacitors went out only several months after the Factory Warranty expired and Samsung at the time said Out of Warranty out of my pocket. At the time Repair Techs wanted $ 225.00 - $ 250.00 I found replacement boards with the same bad capacitors for $ 175.00

What I would like is a NEW replacement board with the right Capacitors "Just In Case", But that 'aint going to happen.

And Sony is also having issues with bad Capacitors. My father just spent $ 200.00 fixing his just out of warranty LCD. Only way Mfg.'s can sell these New technology TV's so cheap is to build them cheap. How many old Tech CRT tubes did we throw away that never gave us a ince of trouble just to get the latest & the greatest ?

I spent $140 to do what the repairman said was "replace the blown capacitor and update everything else". You may agree with me that that sounds like so much******BUT I wasn't about to do it here on a picnic table on a Florida beach.

Regardless I am pleased that Samsung contacted me because I would not have known otherwise.

ITS COOL THAT THE FORUM CONVERTED MY CRA? TO ******.

A TON of flat screen TV's have capacitor issues. Most that I've seen are name brands

Sony, toshiba, RCA seems to be screen issue related, Samsung is capacitor/control boards.

China in general has lousy quality control and I suspect the bad caps are made there.
The company I worked for before I retired bought a facility in China and getting a quality control plan in place that our customers would approve was a tremendous problem for our quality department.

When Korea first started getting into the manufacturing game they had the same issues.

Hopefully China will get be forced to get it's act together and start producing quality components.

What I remember when I researched this issue with Samsung TV's and the Capacitors:

the Capacitors were manufactured in China using a design Stolen (Industrial Espionage) from a German company. It was/is a good design, the problem arose because the German Patent owner apparently did not disclose all of the correct percentages of compounds that went into making the capacitors.

The Chinese knock-offs failed over long term use due to heat. The Capacitors tops will "Bulge" up when they start to fail.

Literally Millions of these capacitors were manufactured and purchased by every electronic manufacture in the world and used in many different applications (not just TV's). The Capacitors were purchased on cost.

It boils down to bean counters trying to save a few pennies.

I too replaced my own caps last summer for about $6.00. But Samsung isn't the only company that has cap problems. The company I work for services our own equipment with over 40k pc,s flat panels, etc's, We have seen computer and flat panels from HP/Compaq and Dell with there fair share of failed caps. The biggest issue with the caps puffing if from the heat generated inside the units. Upsizing the voltage range of the caps help the longivity, but they still don't last as long as we would like. The smaller the PC case size the quicker the caps go bad.

Not a quality control problem so much as a cost cutting one, I'm sure the capacitors worked to spec, they were just too low a rating for their purpose.

My neighbor is a TV and appliance dealer only selling and servicing Mitsubishi and Toshiba TV's. With virtually no work for his repair shop he opened the doors to all TV repair and said he loved Samsung the best because they are keeping his repair business open.
