Why piezo injectors go BOOM and grenade your whole fuel system?
This explains a lot of things, also explains why 2012 and 2013 Passat TDI's with SOLENOID INJECTORS are not destroying HPFP's, while piezo injectors, even in 1600 bar VW V6 3.0L TDI's with piezo still are wrecking HPFP's.
The mechanic I spoke with recently said that they've done at least 4 HPFP's on 2009-2010 Touareg TDI's. I've no idea when Vw will switch the Touareg over to solenoid injectors, if they haven't already or if it's a 2013 development.

I need to see how fuel can get into the cavity that contain the piezo electric discs, and how it can get back to the fuel tank or pump.
Can you post a set of pictures or engineering drawings?

Hmmmm... cavitation, if it occurred, could theoretically provoke a failure of the pump's HP section.
This is an interesting possibility....
Cavitation would mean many things, including lack of lubrication.
Note the removal of the coating from one part and not the other.
That can mean the DLC coated parts have different surface tension characteristics with diesel fuel.... or contaminants like water... or...
Summer is nearly over... and I am now sitting around waiting for the failure reports to come in for the next iteration of the analysis.
