In the political correct environment we now live in, more and more of the "dog trainers" are reccommending harnesses to train your dog. Unless you have an 8 lb. dog don't expect much results. Any large breed with a mind or attitude is not going to be trained with a harness. Good luck with any harness...........

While there are some specific medical conditions that make a harness necessary, I'd agree that you usually get better controll with collars, BUT there are some new ones that really help train out pulling. They basically go under the front legs and when tension is applied to the lead they constrict the axilla (arm pit) and really work to limit pulling on the leash.

This is a situation where "one size fits all" really doesn't work. You need to find what works for you and is best for your dog and situation.

Sorry can't help with the name of the harness recommended at the rally.

I disagree with the first two replies - we use a front lead harness on our 50# who will go after anything that goes by us quickly when we walk her (squirrels, motorcycles, etc...) This was recommended to us by the Oregon Humane Society where she was adopted - here's an amazon link so you can see what it looks like: eferralID=NA&mr:adType=pla&gclid=CJqytIzzoq8CFUYb6wodjBiQXw&mr:trackingCode=B0006664-C881-DE11-B712-001422107090">http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js........ode=B0006664-C881-DE11-B712-001422107090. Be sure you use it correctly - there is a method to using a front lead - and it is made for larger dogs - not good for smaller ones.

I have yet to see one of the front attach harnesses work successfully. We have several LARGE dogs that come in wearing them, and we won't even use the harness to lead them to the back. The dogs immediately get put in a slip leash.

To me, the concept of control is just wrong, and the positioning of the harness gives you none. I suppose in an extremely obedient dog, that faithfully stays at the "heel position", it could work. But an unruly dog jumping around - ZERO control. I would put those harnesses below retractable leashes when it comes to control.

I think they are the latest "gizmo" and somebody's way of making a buck off of unsuspecting people.

Stick with a good old collar (choke, prong, martingale, classic, etc) or with a harness, whether it be a "control" harness or just a harness. But no front attach gizmos.

Think what harnesses were designed for- for pulling! Think sled dog. They take the pressure off the neck and put it on the strongest part of the dog- around the front of the chest. This allows them to pull without cutting off their air.

Use a $2 slip lead and keep it up high behind their ears and they will learn to walk calmly without pulling- has worked for a whole lotta years! Harnesses have a place, but it's not to teach a dog to walk without tugging you down the road.

There are new contraptions on the market every year... in this case it's not a better mousetrap, just a better way to take money out of your pocket.

We us the Gentle Leader. Works great. Our lab walks easily with it, no pulling.

I disagree - they work very well, dogs do not need to be a heel position at all, and one has complete control when used correctly (key).
