Yesterday morning as the wife and I were leaving for work we notice one of our cats sniffing and scratching at a cabinet door next to my computer desk. I went over to see what she was up to and as soon as I got next to the cabinet you could smell smoke. Once I opened the door I could see smoke pouring out of my APC BackUPS unit I had my destop computer hooked to. I quickly unplugged the unit and got it out of my home.

The inside of the case was melted and the circuit boards where toast.

I can only imagine what might have happened if we walked out the door yesterday morning and didn't find the problem.

Here's my plump little hero, Piper

Even though she's on a diet, she earned some extra treats.

WOW!!! You may have lost your computer, but you're a very lucky person!!! I keep telling people that your cats will "talk" to you, if you'll just listen. you listened....

Once you let the smoke or mirrors out they don't work.

Especially scary from something that's supposed to be a "protection" device. Have you talked to APC? Cat heroics aside I'd be interested in hearing what they have to say since I have several APC products.

I wonder how much heat builds up in those things. Does it have a fan that comes on to cool it down?? I have a computer desk with big doors on it. I leave the doors open if the computer is on. Even so, I had two external drives go bad because the heat built up and the insides started to chatter. (I've gone to SeaGate... no more Western Digital for me.) I am careful to have air circulation going inside and around the cabinet now when the computer is on.)

Animals have saved me more times than people. They are amazing once you get connected. They will go above and beyond what you think they can do.
Good job, Piper!

So glad you stopped to see what it was that caught her attention.
