My wife and I love the outdoors and want to share that with our kids. But, there are members of the family who dislike the bugs and critters that go along with being outside. So, my question is do you have any advice on what bug sprays/repellants work best for you? We have heard/read about things like bracelets and whatnot that are out there and were curious about opinions and experiences.

For mild to light bugs I use the Off Active. When the bugs are bad I use Deep Woods Off. The off.com website has a skeeter activity forecast section.

We seldom use any but my MIL swears by Skin-So-Soft lotion as a deterrent to insects. I have used it on occasion and I think it works fairly well. I also know from experience that products like OFF or Cutters will attack plastics and paint’s such as those found in today’s automobiles. So be careful with them.

Eat a lot of garlic. No more bugs.

OFF! Deep Woods repellents provide long-lasting protection against biting insects. They repel ticks that may carry Lyme disease, mosquitoes, biting flies, sand flies, chiggers and gnats. Without the constant bother of insects, outdoor excursions become more enjoyable.

I've no house in the city, just a camping tent in the wild.

Have used Avon Skin So Soft in the past but have not been very happy with the smell and residue it leaves behind. While at a rally a couple of weeks ago, a friend told us about this. I ordered some but have not tried it. He swears by it so we will see. I will report back once I used it.

Anything with DEET in it. Brand doesn't matter. My preference is the small non aerosol bottle of 100% DEET. A tiny amount does the trick.

DEET has been in use since the 1940's and there have been no problems with it in all that time even tho it's been used by billions of people. It works, why fool around with stuff that probably doesn't work.

I agree. It works, it's safe. None of the alternatives work as well. With all the viruses carried by mosquitoes and ticks I want the stuff that works the best especially if it were for the kids.

We bought a ThermaCell several years ago and it is the nicest way to keep bugs away. You don't have to put anything on your skin and the bugs hate it. Probably not the best for kids running around but if your at the campsite it's perfect.
