Taking off today for a short month trip. Leaving my Hughesnet portable behind. I've been using Hughenet for 8 years and kinda got attached to it. Not great broad band speeds but fairly reliable when traveling the Oregon/Washington coastline where we couldn't get a cell phone signal half the time. Last year, we got cell phone signals almost all of the places we stay, so this year I thought I'd take the plunge with an At&T elevate and abandon the Hughesnet. Almost the same price as a Hughesnet account but the Elevate is waaaay easier and less bulky to carry than the Hughesnet. My only concern was with Hughesnet I could get internet service anywhere in the lower 48. No so sure with the Elevate Hotspot cause of the places we travel. We stay away from the big cities and hang out along the coast in smaller towns in Oregon and Washington. I'm only suspending the Hughenet account in case the Elevate hotspot doesn't work out. Looking to buy an Elevate and activate one so I don't have to get a two year commitment.
Would welcome anyones thoughts on the Elevate hotspot by sierra, sold through AT&T.
Thanks
We put our Hughes Net on suspension for 6 months and used our 3G aircard. Activated the Hughes Net last week and was amazed at the improvement over the past 6 months. HN is faster than the Verizon 3G aircard and with the new rollover bandwidth, almost impossible to use it all. Will stay with HN for the foreseeable future.

Check out the AT&T service maps for the areas that you will spend much of your time in.
One thing to consider is not only the availability of cellular service, but also the type of cell service. The AT&T Elevate MIFI has good speeds in 3G and 4G areas, which includes the HSPA+ service.
But in areas that only have the Edge network available, the Elevate is useless; download speed can be less than dialup.
Bob, were you on the portable hughesnet or the automatic rooftop type?
I gotta admit, I'm not parting with the Hughesnet easily. Been using the portable for 8 years and got pretty attached to it. Easy set up. I was just trying to get away from carrying a tripod and the dish. The Hughesnet worked everywhere including Rocky Point.
With everything I read, not sure yet if I'm gonna make the switch. Hughnesnet is pretty reliable for 59.99 a month and I'm on the Net alot.
I tried the hotspot on our Iphone 4's awhile back and it worked just liked you mentioned ryoung. I was less than impressed with that hotspot in the outlying areas. Might just stay with the Hughesnet awhile longer.

Thanks for the info .
Ryoung thanks for the input.
We had a tri-pod system and when the Motosat roof tops started down in price, switched to that. There are many used roof top systems available now and the price is in the tri-pod range. Also, Motosat is no longer the VAR, but a company in Texas called RTC took over their accounts. The service is 100X better now. Visit the Datastorm forum for decent used roof top prices.
