Get another opinion. A head crack on that engine is nearly unheard of but a simple crack towards the rear of the exhaust manifold is fairly common and a lot less expensive to fix.

roberts international trucks is supposed to be a certified spartan chassis and cummins dealer. that is why I took it there, but I am definelty going to get a second opinion. Just not sure where to get a fair diagnosis.

We owned a 2000 Fleetwood American Eagle with the Cummins 350 hp, 8.3 in 2009 and had to replace the exhaust manifold which had developed a leak. In addition, the turbo was replaced along with several other maintenance items such as an oil change with filter, engine air filter replacement, air dryer filter replacement, engine coolant replacement and new filter and new fuel filters, etc. The total bill was a little under $6K. All this work was performed at a Cummins Service Center.

May I suggest you take it to a Cummins Service Center. Be aware that Cummins tends to be a bit on the high side; however, the work was performed to our satisfaction.

Best of luck and keep us posted.

Nobody ever said operating a Diesel Pusher is cheap. I have an 03 40' with a 350 Cummins. I have been in the engine business for over 30 years and I have never heard of an exhaust leak from a cracked head. I would put my money on a cracked Exhaust manifold. Cracked manifolds on these older 8.3 engines is fairly common. If left too long it can & will result in a severe loss of power. Not to mention stinking up the clothes closet.
You are likely looking at 2K for parts and about 12-14 hrs labor as it is a fairly big job especially if the bolts holding the manifold to the head are rusted and hard to get out.
Is the 10K estimate for the exhaust leak or the whole job?

I had my exhaust manifold replaced last year due to an exhaust leak. The cost was $1,200. Get another opinion.

As a remanufactured 8.3 long-block might go for as little as $5000, a built-up head for half of that, and brand new bare heads trading under $1000, ten grand sounds like way too much, even with labor around $125 an hour. Rebuilding the whole engine in-chassis is not a two-weeks worth of labor job, replacing a head shouldn't be more than a couple of days.

I am new to rving and have recieved some great advise on another question I had posted. I sure hope somebody has a good tip on this one. I put my newly purchased 1998 American Tradition into the shop after my first trip out. The tach has not worked since I purchased it, and I bought all new tires and wanted a alignment. I found a company named Roberts truck in savannah, ga that is about 2 hours from where I live. They said that they could do both. I dropped off last week, and have been calling everyday with no response. Today they call me and tell after investigation into tach not working they discovered a exhaust leak, and that lead to finding a small crack in the head causing the exhaust leak? Now I am very limited to my diesel knowledge, and could use any advice or direction from everyone. He quoted me a price over $10000. This diesel only has 61000miles. I am crushed. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, AND DIRECTION.

As another poster suggeted its most likely a exhaust manifold not the head and 10K is absolute highway robbery.Go get your MH and take it elsewhere

I am on my way to Cummins Coach Care in Coberg OR for an exhaust manifold replacement. The parts quote is $693.00 total. The service advisor says 5 hours if there are not broken bolts. So I think it should be around $1000 to 1200 for the job if everything goes well. If the bolts shear off that will drive up the cost.
