I have a 2012 Ford F-150 Ecoboost with the 3.5 V6 engine 3:73 ratio with Max towing package. Sticker on door says GVWR-7650 lbs. Manual says maximum towing capacity is 11,200. Does this mean I can safely tow 11,000? I currently have a 20 ft Jayco. Too small and need to go bigger. Would like 26- 29 feet. Some trailers state on websites shipping weight, not GVWR. Any help greatly appreciated.

The reason its rated at only 11,000 pounds towing is mostly the size of the engine and maybe transmission. A similar F-150 with a big V-8 might be able to go to 16,000 pounds towing. Assuming you and the truck weigh 6,000 pounds your trailer at 5,000 brings you to your max. You could safely tow a 7,000 pound trailer but would the engine and transmission be able to handle the load? Probably towing flat but not climbing the Rockies or trying to get out of Death Valley.

You will run out of payload sooner than towing capacity. Check that number on the door sticker. Subtract weight of occupants and cargo. Subtract about 80 more for the hitch weight. This will give you a an idea of how much tounge weight you can handle.

While shopping trailers take the GVWR of the trailer (max weight it can be) and figure out what 15 percent of that is. That will give you the max tounge weight of the trailer. If it doesn't put you over on payload you should be OK with a good weight distributing hitch /sway control. This little bit of math gives you a fair worst case senario since brochure tounge weight is usually well below actual. My brochure tounge weight is 600 but loaded up it is 800lbs.

My truck is similarly outfitted and give me no trouble with the rig in my signature. There are others here that tow even heavier with an EcoBoost with maxtow as well.

The key is payload....

I have the same ratings but a 5.4. You should have no problems with a TT in the 7000lb loaded range. I wouldn't want to tow anything near 8000lbs loaded with an F150 unless it is the has the 8200# GVW heavy duty package. The 3.5 will do great. Haven't read anywhere that the 3.5 lacks power when towing. Payload will be your biggest concern. With the heavier TT's your looking at a tongue weight around 900lb. So minus that from your payload rating and go from there.

Ok- I'm still a rookie. I can find GVWR on the door sticker, but where do I find payload capacity?
