I have a 2004 36' Monaco Monarch with an aluminum roof. I notice the other day that the white coating on the tape on my roof seams was peeling and it looks like an aluminum layer was showing through. I would assume this is a problem. Question. If I apply Eternabond, can I just apply it over the old tape? Any suggestions? Prep work required?

You can apply EternaBond on top of the old tape with proper prep, for example using EternaPrime first. It preps and old surface for better adhesion.

But if done right, you should remove as much of the old stuff as possible and apply fresh tape over it.

Go to EternaBonds website for instructions.

If the Eternabond can overlap by at least 1/2" on each side you should be OK. What you are seeing is what happens with the cheap imitations.

I would remove any of the old tape ect. Even if you overlap it on both sides the old stuff will more than likely come loose. Definatly follow the eternabond directions.

Another vote for a decent overlap with the Eternabond AND following their instation instructions to the letter.
If it was me I would try to remove as much of the old tape as possible, but still overlap the area when intalling the Eternabond.

Seems like you got hit with what I've been saying about builders using cheaper tape products. You can't equal or exceed Etrnabond.

I was having this same problem with my fiberglass roof where the skylight was taped down. The tape was pulling up on two of the four sides but not far enough so that it would leak.

I got out my putty knife and removed the old tape and all the other gunk they put around the edges of the tape. I then took acetone and cleaned the entire area around the skylight where ever the tape and gunk was applied so that the fiberglass roof was perfectly clean.

I then laid down a single 4" wide strip of eternabond on each side of the skylight overlapping at each corner and making sure the new tape was up on the skylight frame. Rolled the tape with my little wooden roller and cleaned up my mess.

Total time spent was about 45 minutes. Well worth the effort.

My point is that it only takes a little effort and time to do the job right and you won't have to worry about it for years to come.

good luck

I have installed eternabond on all outside seams. I suggest you try to remove all old tape and clean with 409 then apply eternabond. A clean surface gives you the best adhesion!

Remove as much of the old sealant as possible. Clean the surrounding area good with acetone and apply the Eternabond tape. Do it right....do it once.
