I have a 12 year old Dauschand. She has had an occasional (every 2-3 months) bout of upset stomach and needs to go outside 5-6 times before she is back to normal. He stool is very soft and almost watery. She will squat several times and discharge a small amount each time. We give her a little Pepto Bismol that seems to help.

She now has a loose, soft but not runny stool, for the last ten days, that is a light brown. We have looked at everything she eats and nothing has changed. Usually she will only need to make a single trip out several times of the day.

She seems the same in all other aspects. Any advise? She has been on Beneful Healthy Weight for years. Water intake is about the same.

No blood or any thing noticeable in stool.

Take her to the vet. She is obviously under a bit of stress. Get her checked out.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... there are a number of possibilities. Parasites or other medical problem, food allergy/sensitivity and yes, she can develop that after years on the same food, or the same food can be different. Or stress. Or some treat you're not thinking about. More seriously some metabolic problem developing involving liver or kidneys, though I wouldn't get too worried about that unless she's losing condition or the vet thinks you should.

Easiest place to start is with a fecal. Giardia and coccidia are two things that can cause GI upsets and they may not be symptomatic all the time, so you can get that intermittent thing going. So a fecal sample needs to go to the vet for a good going over, for starters. Also a thorough physical exam should be done and from that, the vet can help you decide if bloodwork or anything else is needed. Not that bloodwork is a bad idea, at her age she should really have that yearly. Remember that a year in her life is like five to seven in yours or mine, and that's a plenty long time to go between bloodwork.

I agree with a vet check. In a younger dog I might take more of a wait-and-see approach with a problem like this that doesn't seem too bad. But with an elderly dog IMO it's best to go ahead and get it checked out sooner rather than later.

Ditto the vet check. You could treat the symptoms, but really need to know the underlying cause, particular at her age.

Go see the vet...

Does this by any chance correspond to a rain event? Is your dog lapping up water from puddles by any chance?

Our last Samoyed, Max,... had a bad habit of doing this. I can't tell you how many times that dog had to be put on medication for Giardia.

Chuggs-No rain event. We are experiencing a continuation of the drought from last year. She has free roam outside and follows me around so I watch her closely. Wife used to put water out for her but she will not drink it so she quit. She will only drink water from her bowl in the kitchen. She has a bed and water bowl in the laundry room when we are out but will not drink water from it.

Bought another brand of food yesterday that has a higher meat content but less fiber-thinking fiber causes more frequent bowl movement. I see that the comments so far says we should eat a high fiber food. She has one feeding of the new food and several treats of it-8-10 pieces. Stool was normal this morning but only one bowel movement so far today.

I picked up a large box of dog biscuits at Sam's last month that were generic instead of her normal Milk Bones. Very picky about eating them so back to Milk Bones and she eats them. Has never been a picky eater.

Still drought? Are people doing brush clearance this year, or is that still a foreign concept?

Our area does not get brush clearing because we are fairly heavily forested. We did have a fairly wet winter and things greened up and bloomed better than they have in years but very little rain the last 2-3 months. Weather forecast is for rain Wednesday and Sat. Trees are highly stressed and Texas lost millions of them the last 2 years.

UPDATE-Pet has had 5 good days with normal bowel movements. She is on another dog food but still receives a few bites of the old type food.

Perhaps she had a bug and we were over reacting? Anyway, thanks for the help.
