Given the choices I would have to agree with the V-10 vote...if you go to a 4.30 axle gears, a few guys on the forum report that it will pull every bit as strong as a well-tuned 6.0 diesel.

On a side note: They pull just as well if not better than a 8.1 Burb! So I have been told.

I had a 2004 PSD extended cab short bed. I bought it fall 2003, so I got the 2003 6.0. After 2003 these engines are better. The problems I had with my 2004 PSD was the main seal leaking. After warranty was up I sold it.
I think you are fine with a 2005 PSD, they fixed them after 2003. You will enjoy being thrown back in the seat even towing.

I've got a 2004 Excursion with the V-10 and love it. I added a Roadmaster Active Suspension to give it a little more lift in the back end and b/c I tow a trailer with a length of about 39' from hitch to bumper.

Also use a ProPride 3P and have no problems whatsoever - towing is a peice of cake!

FWIW, I have owned two V10 Excursions. Both were 2000 models with 4.30 gears. I have also owned a 99 V10 2wd F350 CC, LB, DRW truck with 4.30s. While all three towed well up to a certain weight, anything over 7000lbs on the hitch started to really tax each one. When I moved from CA to CO six years ago I towed a 28ft enclosed trailer Loaded with my house with my Excursion from SoCal to Eastern Colorado over I70. I was in 1st gear on both major pass pulls doing 25mph. Trailer weight was around 12,000lbs.

Now, I currently own a 01' 7.3L Excursion. It has 3.73s. But, it has "mods". I have a 4" Exhaust, Ford "HD" replacement tranny with triple disc Billet clutch torque converter. I also have a DP Tuner with tow tunes. I can easily run 65mph over both major pass pulls with 10,000lbs on the ass end of it. The only thing that will slow me down is my EGTs. But, they aren't a concern unless someone is slowing me down and I have to lug the motor. There is no possible way that any V10 will keep up with me with the same weight.

I used to drink the "my gasser is just as good" water for years when I owned one. The truth is that if you've never towed with a diesel you just can't compare it. Since getting rid of my V10s, I have also owned a 96 F250 5spd 7.3L, and my most recent 97' F350 CC, LB, 4x4, 7.3L. Plain and simple: When it comes to towing, the diesel is where its at.

I will agree that the 6.0L is NOT a very good motor. In fact, there are really only two Ford diesels I would ever own. The 7.3L, and the new 6.7L.

MY advice to the OP is to hold out for a lower mileage 7.3L. My 97' F350 had 313K on it. I sold it yesterday for $12K. I kept the Excursion mainly because it fits my family's needs more than the truck did. Both would run circles around a gasser.

Lots more food for thought. I am a teacher and school is almost out, so I hope to be able to do some more research and maybe even test drive both these TVs. They are both still available. I will also take the advice to consider the 2500 Burb...it is nice to have options.

I test drove a '00 7.3L diesel Excursion after owning my V10 with the 4.30 for over a year to see what the difference was. I didn't test drive towing.

One thing I did notice was that the 7.3L had a slow acceleration from a stop. I step on the accelerator and it was a gradual acceleration. On my V10, it just goes from a stop.

I'm sure if towing, the 7.3L will pull up mountain passes with ease

Maybe one of you guys that's smarter can educate me - how can you tell which gear ratio a truck has? I've never really had to look, or found the need to, but I'm curious.

I love my 2000 Excursion. Bought rear air bags to help prop up the back. It really helped.
