On my car it is 18 years old and my mechanic just looked at it. Saw no cracking and said it was good to go. Drove out to Yellowstone and back without an incident.
Belts and hoses are made with better material then back in the old days. If you have a quality belt or hose it should last a long time. It's those cheap autopart store items that concern me more.

Earier to change it when you have the tools and the engine is not hot. Save the old one and then do not worry about it for ten years. Draw a diagram on the box that the new one came in, that way you will never need it.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

I have the 3126 300 CAT. Don't know where the ten year deal is coming from. With rear radiator, there is a lot of heat over the belt. I have replaced one at 104,000 and another at 175,000. Both of them on the side of the road. The first one was inspected the day before it went out. The MH is a 99 with 185,000 miles now.

RayChez wrote: It is a job and a half to change it on the 3126-E Cat engine. Once I see cracks on the rubber I will take it to Freightliner to change it out. I believe they will have to remove the air cleaner and part of the duct to be able to get to it on mine. That is what is bad about rear radiators.
Ray,
Really depends on whether it is rear or side radiator. I can change my serpentine belt (Caterpillar with side radiator) in under 3 minutes.
So, it is less and engine issue and more an access to engine issue.

Steve,
Our 08 6.7 ISB threw the belt on the ground (literally) at 11,000 miles. Just like anything that is man made an unexpected failure can occur. Usually a serp belt will last a long time (50,000 easily). Cracks across the ribs are nothing to panic about but the belt(s) should be replaced prior to any long trip. The replacement is more for peace of mind than it is to prevent a failure. I always use the old adage, "If you are thinking about it. Replace it". This is something I learned in my late teens in relation to the tires on my motorcycle.

We just replaced ours, before we took a trip to Las Vegas last week. The belt had just started to crack after 12 years and 78,645 miles. Did all the hoses at the same time. 2000 Winnebago Journey with the Cumming 275 rear radiator.

Mine lasted 35000, 4 years before it broke. I inspect mine before trips and when I change the oil. I have 74000 miles total now and will replace it next year.
Its rubber. They wear out.
Better than that, they cost all of about $35.00 so forget using the old one as a spare. Throw it away. Carry a new one for a spare.

othertonka wrote: Regardless of when you should change the serp. belt, it is imperative that you find the belt routing diagram for your engine. If you can't find the diagram draw one up yourself and/or take a picture now before the belt breaks. After the belt is gone it is real hard to figure out the routing. Just a thought, I drew a diagram for mine.
