Oh, my god! We got to watch a mother brown bear with FOUR cubs catch and eat salmon just before the hatchery out Dayville Road for forty-five minutes. Unbelievably exciting! Eventually mama got full and bolted across the road with a big salmon in her mouth followed a little later by all four babies.

We were in Valdez in 2010 at that location. Did you get ice cream from Miss Peggy? She is the one who told us to go to that location for viewing bear.
Haines is another place we saw the bear catching their fish along the river, then crossing the road and up the hill to the wooded area to feed.
Exciting to watch.

We were at that same location in 2009 watching a momma and 3 bear cubs doing the same thing. It was awesome and we were so close to them. We got some great pics.

Very nice pictures. It almost looks like all those people don't realize those are wild animals, and a mama bear with cubs can turn unfriendly fast!

While at Valdez, we heard a bear was coming to Allison Point every evening. We went out there, only to be told the bear had already been there. We watched the seals for a while and turned our vehicle around to leave when we noticed the bear coming out of the trees, cross the road and work his way down the bank to the water ! Several fishermen were down by the water and it was most entertaining to watch them gather their gear and scramble up the bank out of his way. Yes, spectators get too close. Our best bear watching was at Stewart-Hyder, however.

My high school friend won a lottery slot this year to go to McNeil River to watch the bears feast on the salmon. He is also a professional photographer... This is his Facebook page with the photos
- he just got back to civilization yesterday.
