We need to go from Sault Saint Marie MI to Marquette MI. Mapquest suggests Rte 28 or Rte 2.

Rte 28 is a lot closer. Any reason we shouldn't go with it?

We have a 38' fifth wheel and a one ton truck. We are looking for an easy drama-free pull that day.

Thanks.

Yes... M28 for sure. Very scenic. No issues.

If anything, MI28 is better, since it crosses the interior of the peninsula, rather than follow the south coast. Generally it straighter.

Interior? Some yes but it's many, many miles of Lake Superior lakeshore driving. More than US2 and Lake Michigan. One of the most scenic drives in the US....

Take M28. It is much shorter than driving all the way down to US2 and then back up to Marquette. M28 is a wonderful drive. US2 has many construction zones this year.

Did the same route last August on M28. Great road and wonderful roadside (lakeshore) parks when you get closer to Marquette.

I used to live in Marquette and have traveled nearly every corner of the U.P. at one time or antoher. We just got back from about 2 weeks in the U.P. Definitely M-28. Be sure you have your fuel full because other than fueling opportunities in Newberry there isn't much until you get to Munising.

As a side trip, if you have the time, when you get to Seney turn north onto M-77 and follow that to Grand Marais. There's a great campground on the west side of town called Woodland Park. It's a municipal campground with grassy sites, Lake Superior beach, electric & water, for $24/night. Then you can take a newly paved road from Grand Marais to Munising, H-58. It's a curvy road through much of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Nice drive although not much of it follows along the lake. You will come into Munising at an intersection with M-28.

Another point along the M-28 route is near Autrain. It's an area between Munising and Marquette. They have nice beaches on Lake Superior, especially where the Autrain River empties into the lake. As you get toward Marquette the beaches aren't as nice. There are a couple of large turnouts in that area.

Not many camping locations in Marquette. I'd stay away from the Gitchee Gumee Campground---poor ratings on RV Park Reviews.com. It's a poor set up and not much of a campground (I've seem it) The Tourist Park campground on the north side of Marquette near the college isn't bad though.
