RE: Engine seems to be misfiring under load

I had same problem and it was both of the rear spark plug wires. Plug wire problems are well known in the 8.1.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

Don't run the washer with the valve closed. That allows whatever is causing this to settle either in the tank or at the valve.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

The mystery still remains. Why immediate backup into shower pan with a small amount of water if gray tank is empty. Clearly it was not. Second, why did it run free when valve open. If it was partially plugged I understand it would have run through the valve slowly over time but a washing machine and showers should have eventually backed up even with the valve open. Finally why did the gauges show empty when plugged and then show full as the rinsing exercise was taking place. If someone can explain this my understanding of plumbing in RV's will certainly improve. Happy for making new friends. I love this forum for all the people you meet on-line and sometimes run into along the way. I have had times where I met someone in the same campground as were writing on the same thread. I also got great help in New Mexico from an on-line reader. So anyone help me solve the mystery of the full or not so full gray holding tank. P.S. With the size of that gray tank it had to take some significant time to fill and flush and keep redoing the process with hot water. I've been following this thread from the start as we also have an '08 Dynasty. Goldencrazy, it's really not a mystery at all. The fact is, the tank monitor was wrong and right at the same time. I'm thinking the 'stuff' that was accumulating in the grey tank was geared towards the center, drying out because Anita kept the grey tank valve open for months at a time. The sensors are on the outside of the tank (they don't have xray vision you know, LOL). She was building the 'dreaded' fabric softener/grease/gunk pyramid, apparently, in the middle. Since it was piling up in the middle, the tank sensors couldn't read it. The washing machine didn't back up because the grey valve was open and the water was just going around the pyramid making the exit which is probably near the edge of the tank and not where the pyramid was building. Water really doesn't come out that fast out of the shower head so I can see why it didn't back up in the shower even though the grey valve open but somewhat restricted. MM. This does not make sense. If there is a pyramid in the middle of the tank and the valve is clear, then either the pyramid had to come into the shower drain trap or the shower water would have found the same exit as the washer water.

RE: how to defeat ticks

I'd like a solution, if there is one, as well. My dogs are on Revolution which works great for everything but ticks. We used Frontline Plus. It seemed to be the best product. One caution - check the dog when it comes in. Sometimes the tick will jump on but will not dig in. We did find a few that had to be flushed. Very few over ten years that actually dug in.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

03ultra You said "The only thing further down the line than both is the dump valve". The dump valve was NOT clogged as she said that with it open the water ran out ok and water did not backup into shower. So what about the dump valve????? What she said was that when the valve was open (she did not specify how long) the water "drained". What she also said was that when the valve was open she could hear it "gurgling". My point was, that when the valve was left open water slowly drained. When it was closed the water would back up into the shower pan. If the water did not always back up into the shower pan, then neither the vent or the shower drain could be blocked. There are many inlets to the gray tank (shower, sink, washer), a vent and an outlet. If water does not flow freely from the inlet to the outlet, one or the other is blocked. The only reason water backed into the shower pan was that is the lowest point. If the problem was a massive buildup in the tank that restricted the water flow, you would always have the problem of a backup and the dump valve being open or closed would have no bearing on the problem. The simple explanation is that the water from the shower was entering the tank faster than the water was flowing out through the dump valve and so it would back up, then slowly it would drain. A clue in this is that the speed at which it was draining from the shower pan when it did back up and the valve was open has to be the speed the water was flowing through the dump valve. The restriction could have been in the valve or in the pipe to the valve, but the problem was at the dump valve side of the equation, not at the shower or the vent. Draw a box with two lines coming out of the top and one out of the bottom. The two at the top are the shower drain and the vent. If you pour water down the vent it goes back up the shower drain. That tells you that the vent is clear and the drain is clear, otherwise the water could not get there. If the problem was with the shower drain, the water would have backed up the vent pipe. Once you establish that the two lines on the top are clear, where could the restriction logically occur?

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

Ok, so I may be a bit thick. Glad it is fixed. Now for what happened. So why did the gray water run ok when the valve was open and immediately not run when closed? Because the problem was not that the vent was plugged, it was a problem with draining. If she left the gray valve open for a while, the water was draining slowly. If the valve was closed it was not draining at all. I knew the problem was with draining when the water she put down the vent backed up into the shower. The vent pipe goes right to the tank. The shower drain goes right to the tank. If you put water down the vent and it baks up the vent, the vent is plugged. If you put water down the vent and it backs up into the shower drain, the problem is farther down the line from either the vent or the shower drain. The only thing further down the line than both is the dump valve. The washer drain goes directly to the gray tank and in order for this to be a problem in the washer drain system the shower would not be backing up. Therefore the problem is beyond the point where the washer drains into the tank as well.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

The air venting can not be the problem since the vent is clear into the tank.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

http://www.walmart.com/cp/RV-Accessories/1070265 Look at the Camco RV Dual Flush Pro. That is what I was talking about. It allows you to push water up to your holding tank.

RE: Gray tank empty and not filling?

The problem is obvious. The gray tank is plugged, not the air vent. If she puts water down the vent, it backs up into the shower pan. That means the water is getting "below" the shower drain and into the tank, and then running back up. So that means the vent to the tank is clear of obstruction otherwise the water would back up the vent line and never make it to the shower drain. The blockage is not total. So if you leave the gray tank valve open it slowly drops the water in the tank and you are able to take a shower without it backing up. I would guess you only take one shower a day so the tank is able to drop the water level. One thing you could do is opne the gray valve with your drain hose on the ground and see if the water gushes out or trickles. I'll bet it trickles. I have an attachment that I can use on the 3 inch drain that allows me to shoot water UP the drain into the tanks. It attaches between the drain pipe and the drain hose. It has a valve on the "lower" side towards the drain hose, and a fitting for a regular garden hose above the valve (and that has a check valve to prevent backflow into the garden hose). You just put that on, attach a garden hose, put the water on, open the valve on the attachment and let it build some pressure and then open the gray tank. The water pushes up to the tank and hits the blocakge from the reverse side. If I wasn't snowed in I would takle a picture of the attachment. I'll see if I can find one on-line and post a link to it.

RE: Know any old interesting family stories ?

My wife's grandmother took in foster children. In the late 30's or early 40's she took in two small children, I believe they were infants. They were the Von Trapp babies who later opened a ski resort in Vermont. My wife's father's family is descended from William Wallace. My great-granfather's (mom's grandfather) first wife was one of the first victims of a hit and run in the state of CT. He also was a sawyer. They had two camps and a mill that were pulled by teams of horses to a site that was to be cleared; later on they used trucks and expanded their service area. One camp was for the help and the other was his as well as the cooking camp. They would pull out as soon as the spring weather allowed and would be gone until late fall. While the majority of the crew was out working on clearing lots, some cut trees and piled them back home, where the crew would saw them up during the winter.

RE: Rent or Toad

We rent from Enterprise. They pick us up! A lot of times we travel to campgrounds that are near our actual destination and they run shuttles, so we don't rent. Disney and campgrounds near the beach that shuttle you to the beach are examples. I do think that my next car will be something I can pull if I want to on a tow dolly or with a tow bar.

Father-in-law

On January 8 at 12:40 PM my 74 year old father-in-law peacefully passed away. He suffered without complaint for the last three years of his life and he is finally free of his damaged and weak body. He was a hard worker until illness forced him to retire at age 66. He went from the work force to a life revolving around his physical issues, never getting to do the travleling he always wanted to. He ran his own poultry farm for many years, I worked there part time from the time I was 13 until he shut it down when I was 17 or 18. He owned and operated a saw mill complete with a finishing shop (manufactured finished wood products like moldings, door jambs, clapboards, shingles, etc). I worked with him there for about 5 years until he had to shut it down. All the while he was a full time high-pressure steam engineer. He was a skilled woodworker and craftsman. His wife was the light of his life, and his childen and grandchildren brought him much joy. He was my second father. He was quiet and reserved and I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. I also never heard anyone have anything bad to say about him. At the calling hours "easy going, nicest guy, happy-go-lucky" were the common comments. He read a lot, mostly westerns, history or the bible. I will miss him terribly but I know he is in a much better place, free of pain. One thing I learned from him and I wish he learned it earlier. He was diagnosed with diabetes when he was in his mid thirties. That disease robbed him of his retirement, robbed his wife of her soul mate and robbed his grandchildren. His outlook was that he was not going to let the disease rule his life, and that was his mistake. In the end it not only ruled his life, it ruined his life. He lost both legs, his sight was severly impacted and as a result the last three years of his life were spent either on his back in a bed or in a wheelchair. If you or someone you loves has this awful disease pay attnetion to it and make whatever lifestyle changes you must in order to keep it at bay. Otherwise your loved ones will be left to wonder "what if" for the rest of their lives.

RE: Fed Up with Campgrounds Charging Extra for Kids

Just to play devil's advocate here for a moment. I sometimes travel alone, but I still pay the same as a family of four does in most campgrounds. Shouldn't I be getting upset at paying for facilities I don't use?:h Not something that bothers me, simply another point of view. Excellent point. Using that logic, all CG's should simply charge by the person, not by the space.

RE: Children

you cannot compare mental illness to kids from a divorced home. I believe the story of the shooting is more about a child with mental illness - don't get me wrong, I would in no way defend his actions. We, as a society need to deal with the millions in this country who are mentally ill. I have no idea what the answer is, but I do know ignoring the problem has not worked so far. I agree. Part of the problem is that services to people with mental illness have been cut. Schools are now the focal point of service delivery to people with mental illness under the guise of Special Education. While special educational needs can be addressed, I feel that a school is not really the appropriate place to deal with true mental illness. I am the chair of our local school board and over the past few years have been privy to some pretty upsetting things. There are some people out there who we are all failing. Forcing them to be in a public school and be subjected to "classroom inclusion" upsets them and scares the heck out of professionals who are trying to teach. We teach them how they are supposed to behave, but we never really deal with the underlying mental illness because the school employees are not mental health professionals.

RE: McDonalds-open on Christmas ??

We are a 24/7 operation. Many employees are Jewish, a few are atheist. We allow people to put in for all relgious holidays and "trade off". So if you want a Jewish holiday off as a paid holiday, you take that day but work Dec 25th. As a last resort, reverse seniority rules. Been here the shortest time - get the short end of the stick. I do not recall in over 25 years of managing the call center a single person required to work a holiday. They all either trade shifts with other employees or set their holiday schedules around work schedules.
