RE: The Emotions in a TC

If your TC is paid for, why not have a travel trailer TOO? Many people have a TC and a large fifth wheel or other trailer.

RE: days out camping goal

I don't think I would or could ever compare my camping nights to hotel nights on just the $$$$ only. Camping gives me campfires, ATV riding, outdoor sports, friends for life, etc...the thing we do is camp in our TC and ride quads. Nothing like (this weekend for example) of riding quads and camping with 30 friends (and families) at Morrow County OHV park for four days. $200 of diesel and ATV fuel is cheaper then the Hilton in Hawaii.
Hilton would not compare. A few hotel nights like in Vegas are enjoyable but I'd rather be camping.

RE: days out camping goal

I count more as a side effect of wanting to keep track of where we've been and the site spots for reference later on when wanting to go back to the same park/site or for remembering when/were pics were taken.

RE: days out camping goal

I work more then full time, my goal is 55-60 nights in the camper each year. Last year we hit 45, this year with a few more long trips 55 will be pretty easy.

RE: New to me AF camper, couple questions

On my 2011 AF 1150 the Grey sensor seems to work really well. The Black tank sensor like others have said seems to read 2/3 full after just driving around a little bit with 1 gallon of ''stuff'' in it.
We have left our fridge on almost three years now. On propane it can run a very long long time. At home the camper is plugged in 24/7 when parked.(we have a 2-Way)

RE: Where Have You Taken Your 4x4 Dually Pickup & TC OffRoad

Lots of Forest Service and Oregon State Forestry land dirt/gravel roads. I basically haul the truck and TC pulling a trailer with quads and a RZR for the REAL offroad fun....
4 wheel drive sometimes needed during the wet season and/or when we camp in snow. A lot of the roads can be 4 inches of muck so I run Goodyear Duratrac tires for traction and carry chains too.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

I work and live in a congested area - Even my short SRW has trouble fitting in some of the spots that were designed for the Prius crowd. To discount the additional width and length as nothing only means you drive outside of a major city. Even height in parking garages can be a problem - I squeak by just under 7' and have to remove my radio antenna to keep it from catching everything hanging off the ceiling. I have also had to back out of a tight garage because speed bumps were added later and my cab would have contacted the ceiling when going over them.
Fortunately, I rarely have to take the truck into town, but even the local store parking lots are down sized to meet parking requirements in less than adequate space. Many times there is no "back 40" parking and you have to circle the lot until a space frees up.
Agree the ''back 40'' is becoming less and less and they have reduced the required numbers of spaces needed, then added the requirements of tree islands and curbing to increase our fun.

RE: What Are The Upsides & Downsides To Driving A DRW Truck?

wnjj - It's not the math of "wider" that's hard to understand...it's how much of an impact this actually has on the vehicle's use. How often have you had to actually pass by a spot in your dually that you would have used if it was a SRW?
Sure, the numbers say it's wider...but no dually owners here are saying, "You know, if only I had an SRW I wouldn't have wasted so much of my vacation time looking for bigger parking spaces."
It's the difference between experience and folks looking up numbers on the internet.
I never have this issue, as I ALWAYS back in my dually until the tires are touching the curb or sidewalk. That puts my doors where most other vehicles have there doors....
The downside to a dually: 2 more tires to buy and sometimes you might have to walk a little further in a parking lot. If you need a dually for the weight you should get it.
I have been daily driving a dually for 8 years now and won't ever go back as long as I have a TC and tow at the same time. Even if we switch to a toy hauler fifth wheel I will stick to duallies.

RE: What do you do with the tailgate?

When the camper is on the tailgate gets wrapped in a moving blanket and put in the garage. I take it on and off for every camping weekend since i find the rear camera very handy when hooking up trailers and parking.

RE: 2011 Ram dually: best susp. setup, tie-downs & hitch exten?

I am running Firestone incab adjustable airbags....and like them.
So just air bags? No other mods?
lots of mods. Front leveling kit, Adjustable Rancho shocks. Rear sway bar and stable loads too. And the full Superhitch/Torklift system.

RE: Dually Tires

I am running Goodyear Duratracs on my Ram 2011 3500 dually and LOVE them. They are a commercial traction tire. Rated for snow/mud with the snow flake on them. I ride ATVs so I am always on cruddy gravel roads and mud in the winter. Have been great tires for what I need. Toyo M55 was my other choice. Went with Goodyear for the $400 in savings.
How many miles did you get out of your original POS Generals? Mine made it to 23K and had a knot on the front tire tread. They were over 1/2 worn out!
I got about 35K out of the Generals. They were pretty worn out by then. For sure not fit for winter driving. I had pretty even wear with rotations and two alignment checks done. I had no problems with the Generals except for one screw that was patched. Even with hauling our huge truck camper I felt they did ''okay'' for being factory street tires.

RE: 1150 vs. 990

If towing go with a 990.
I have the AF 1150 Drybath on my Ram 3500 CC dually. My choice was the 990, she chose the 1150 for a little more space inside. We have a 6 year old and a 80# Rottie too. I wanted the 990 just cause its a little lighter, a little shorter and we do tow a 20' enclosed trailer with quads and a RZR inside....
Our next setup will likely be either a 9.5-10' camper unless we go with a side door entrance and get a bigger truck. Like a Ram 4500/5500 flatbed.

RE: 2011 Ram dually: best susp. setup, tie-downs & hitch exten?

My suggestion is the same as everybody else's; Go with TorkLift! Their tie-downs, FastGuns, StableLoads, SueprHitch, & SuperTruss are the best on the market and their customer service is top-notch. You've made a substantial investment in an awesome truck/camper combo... don't cut corners now. Spend the extra $$$ now and you won't be sorry later.
I also suggest a RoadMaster rear anti-sway bar for your Ram.
Cheers
-Mark
Agree, I have the same, Torklift tie-downs, fastguns, stableloads, superhitch, 48'' Supertruss, incab adjustable Firestone Airbags, and incab adjustable Rancho shocks. I also have a Heavy Duty swaybar too. Would not run my setup of AF 1150 and pulling a 20' enclosed trailer with ATVs and a RZR without the full setup. I'd do the same for a 5k boat and trailer.

RE: General tires are JUNK!!!!!

I am disgusted with the tires that came on my 2011 Ram Dually. General Ameritrack made in Mexico.
I have 23K on them and they are more than 1/2 worn out. If that was not bad enough the last couple days the front end started acting up and today it got real bad. I checked the tires and there was about a 1/2" high raised area on the tread of the passenger front tire.
I looked up General distributors and Discount Tire was listed. The sales guy measured all the tires and since one of the other tires were more than 2/32" thinner than the others he said he could only warrant the bad tire if I bought the other.
No way was I going to throw good money after bad. I went to Costco and got a price for just over $1,800 for 6 Michelins. Called Discount and got a better grade Michelin for about $350 less. I was very surprised. So I told them to get them in and I will have them installed tomorrow.
Time will tell but I always get over 100K on a set of Michelins.
I tried to get Dave Smith to swap the POS tires for Michelins when I bought it but they said they all come with Generals.
Now the truck will be the way it should have been from the factory.
I'm surprised that this is news to you. All manufactures really don't put that good of tires on anyways. We've had the same thing with our cars and other trucks from Toyota and Ford with Goodyears, Michlins, etc... The original Generals on my 2011 Ram 3500 dually were worn out and replaced at 38K with Goodyear Duratracs before winter hit six months ago. I kept the rotated and had two alignments done. They wore evenly and I never had a flat or tire issue.

RE: How to enjoy packing for a trip

If we are leaving on a Friday after school is out. I usually put the camper on the truck, Thursday night along with check tire pressure, etc..Then on the day of leaving we pretty much only need to put in perishable food, medicine and go. We have camp clothes, shoes, and jackets, etc...that just stay in the camper all the time.
When we get home we start the laundry right away, do a little cleanup, and refill the firewood. As laundry is clean we put it in the camper right away so it does not sit in the house.
And my wife and I work as a team so even getting ready or unloading only takes less then an hour now.

RE: New Ram president and CEO ??

Well as one of those Ram guys who'd love the new 2013 Ram 3500 Dually capabilities the promises and timing was very screwed up. Talk to people who ordered a 2013 3500...Ram should just can the idea of a 2013 3500 run. Slow down, do it right and start it with a 2014 even if it ends up being a long run.
