RE: Health Care
We agree about a lot.
Our system is also broken. Took 60 years for that and I am kinda hoping you guys down there create a better less costly one as a model to influence our change. I love what we have - no real complaints.
IMHO, a public broken system that needs tuning is better than no system or a system that is controlled by greed.
That 60 min link above was good.
RE: Health Care
Rick, you forgot to mention the existing 100 million that do speak English and cannot afford what the monthly cost are today.
The haves shall always help the have nots in hopes that they too shall become the haves one day.
Because someone is going through short term hard times does not mean they should also carry the stresses of not having health care.
RE: Health Care
OK Rick, so to keep it in perspective.
Yes Canada would have a struggle if our coverage needed to be increased by 10% on the population.
But there would never be an option not to do it.
RE: Health Care
Thanks for that link. It was good.
These are the most difficult issues we will ever deal with in 'other peoples lives'. I for one do not want to be kept alive the way these people were.
On a financial note.........
Here in Ontario Canada I have never seen a a medical bill (ever). I do believe that many medical frauds are happening every minute of the day.
If the USa public option also ensured that the public / patient must see the bill and have a right to question it, it could help influence our system for the better.
RE: Health Care
$900 per month for the two of us. No prescription/vision/dental.
And you are not covered.
Wow, I hope this thread is allowed to continue. I would really like to hear opinions that defend this position. Just a guess but I believe that the % of all the people that want this health care package is a very high majority. They too will start to speak up. sooner or later the news media will reflect this.
I (and tens of millions others) have been blessed to have had coverage our whole life without worry!
RE: Wounded and bloodied but.....
Some say material things do not matter. Fact is, we tend to lose health worrying about things that should not matter.
What does matter is 'your back' and among people that care about your well being. Hang in there & welcome back!
RE: Health Care
Health care in Canada IS NOT FREE.
All Canadians pay for it through our income taxes, and sales taxes on things that we buy.
IT IS " Universal " and that means that every Canadian citizen, and legal immigrant is covered, with no one being " excluded or cut off ". No one in Canada is being forced into bankruptcy, by medical bills, and no one here is making a plea to get funds for their child to get a kidney transplant.
With everyone paying into the plan, and our non profit publically owned hospitals, with local boards of directors, we get the care we need , when we need it.
Don't listen to the US heath insurance lobbyists, Canadians are happy with the care we receive, and no politician in Canada would do anything to change the system. Improve it, yes, but not to reduce it in any way.
Sixty years is the length of time that we have had this system, and we like it just fine.
And , as for that line about "socialised medicine " don't you all ready have that ? Medicaid and social security, I think it is called ? Funny how the right wingers can't get so worked up about having fire departments and Police departments in their towns ? Aren't they examples of "socialised community services " ?
Jim B. Toronto.
Well put Jim.
We do pay via taxes. I would also suggest that we pay a lot and don't see how much or where it goes. I will say this 'I have never met a poor Dr.' and know a few.
When a country sets aside trillions of dollars for the so-called protection of it's people, it is reasonable to say that the good health of the people must be at the top of the list for a healthy country.
Not all of the interest / investment off the mainland USA is contributing to the health of the people of tha USA. A health care system would.
It is nothing more than greed and political posturing with financial kickbacks that is creating the worlds entertainment right now. All I can say is WOW! If you cannot see the logic follow the financial trail and the companies backing it.
IMHO.
RE: Digital Picture Frames
Mine failed (power supply related) 2 days after I bought it for my mother.
I returned it, did not replace it.
Was a little turned off after spending 30 hours getting about 1700 pic's in order.
I created a slide show on a DVD and gave it to her!
ps.......
The funeral parlor charges a few hundred to create a slide show of a few dozen pic's. I will buy one before they get a shot at me! Gees, what a ripoff.
RE: Retired, may I ask your opinion
IMHO, you have no problems now and are worrying about the future.
You love your job. So only cut back 50% of the job and enjoy yourself.
I would much rather spoil my kids while I am around to see them enjoy it.
Good luck to you and stay healthy.
The only issues you have are the ones in your mind because the rest seems to have been well managed.
You could be a multi-millionaire and not know it when you get ill. You could also be very poor and not know it when you get ill and enter community care services.
Enjoy what you have built and share while you can enjoy seeing the results.
Beyond these 'off the shelf' one liners I am not qualified to offer more.
Canada Newfie Moose Hunters
Canada Newfie Moose Hunters
Having shot a moose, two Newfies began dragging it by the tail to their pick-up.
On the way they were stopped by a game warden. "Let me see your hunting licenses boys," he said. When he saw that everything was in order he asked if he could give them some advice.
"Sure!" the hunters agreed.
"Well boys, I think that you would find it a lot easier to drag that moose by the horns and not the tail."
"Aye, O.K. and thanks," said the lads.
After about five minutes one said to the other, "Boy, dragging by the horns is sure a lot easier, eh?"
"Aye, you're right," said his friend, "but have you noticed that we are getting further away from the truck?"

How to become famous
The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day. Needing to have an urgent problem with one of the main computers resolved, he dialed the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper.
'Hello?'
'Is your daddy home?' he asked.
'Yes,' whispered the small voice.
'May I talk with him?'
The child whispered,
'No.'
Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked,
'Is your Mummy there?'
'Yes'
'May I talk with her?'
Again the small voice whispered,
'No'
Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked,
'Is anybody else there?'
'Yes,' whispered the child, 'a policeman.'
Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked,
'May I speak with the policeman?'
'No, he's busy,' whispered the child.
'Busy doing what?'
'Talking to Daddy and Mummy and the Fireman,' came the whispered answer.
Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked,
'What is that noise?'
'A helicopter' answered the whispering voice.
'What is going on there?'
demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered,
'The search team just landed a helicopter '
Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked,
'What are they searching for?'
Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle...
'ME.'
