RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

Gary, it has been quite a thread. I'll probably post the final pictures of the 67 Avion restoration in the next week or so. I've had some last minute issues with it, as I noted in some other posts. In particular, I couldn't make it to the Overland Expo because of electrical problems. That was a real disappointment. But, we all keep plugging along. I hope we'll hear from some of the others as they make progress. In the meantime, may the clouds part and the sun shine in Kodiak.

RE: Calling all Trolls & Yoopers! Where are the best pasties?

In my opinion pasties taste better in Butte, Montana, though they are good in the UP as well. However, smoked white fish is to die for, and its everywhere in the UP. Its the perfect TC food... spread out on a table with bread, wine, onions.....and for connoisseurs there is the delicacy of white fish livers sauteed and served over a bed of wild mushrooms and wild rice. White fish doesn't ship that well. But its perfect along Lake Superior.

RE: Vintage camper repair

You should post some pictures of the camper both outside and inside. If you can supply more information you may jog some memories. There is a lot of interest on this forum on restoring vintage campers. Best of luck.

RE: The Overland Expo Nation Proclamation

Glad to see the Grand Whazoo is back. Sorry we missed meeting up at the Expo.

RE: Trip report, part one: 2013 Overland Expo and the TC flood

It was with deep regret that we missed the Expo. We worked on the camper/truck until late on the evening of departure. It was not to be. An electrical system malfunction that continued to cascade absolutely defeated us. I had talked to Steve and Whazoo and others long before the event got underway, and assured everyone that the renovated Avion would be there on its maiden trip. In fact the truck camper is still in the shop as I write. This much I can assure you: we will make it in 2014. And that's a promise. Glad all you guys had a great meet up.

RE: TC in South America / Design choices

Henrik, I also hope that you give the Expo another thought. If my rig makes it, I plan to spend most of the time talking to other TC owners. I'd love to learn more about your experiences, though the blog surely gives a lot of info.

RE: California Fire

I lived in southern California for a number of years and watched fire after fire sweep down the hills and ravines. Though I think that the words used to describe the photo were poorly chosen, I do think there is an immense sense of frustration as people have managed to put themselves and their property in danger by building in areas that are inherently dangerous. To the rescue would come the firemen and kids from the prison work camps whom I accompanied on a number of occasions. Inevitably, over time, there would be tragedies as a fire roared up a canyon and engulfed the firefighters. So perhaps the poster was reflecting the fatigue many of us had in SoCAl with the mudslides, fires and traffic smashups. I felt that the place was out of control, unfortunately. Its beauty and wonderful people notwithstanding.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

The things you learn! So it turns out there were OEM slumber bags and a contoured slipcover for cab-over mattress? Who knew? And now my sweet wife informs me that my calculations for late 60s costs in terms of present day dollar value was off as well. It appears that the Avion with options could run $32,000 - $40,000 in today's money.I can't find the sticker price for a 1969 era one ton Ford pickup, but I think it was around $3K to $4K - meaning that your Avion TC rig circa 1969 - 1970 cost around $75,000 in today's prices. I think. Maybe some other folk have a better handle on this, but I think it gives some insight into the Avion buyer.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

The $4300 figure is calculated to be around $24,000 in today's currency adjusting for inflation. That is at the lower end of the top priced TCs available today, I think.

Thanks for the explanation. At any rate I'm glad to see the post.

RE: I guess this counts as a truck camper?

That looks interesting..... and the price seems quite low. My idea is that you buy it and then let it out to folks like me to travel through Europe.

RE: TC in South America / Design choices

This is probably a bit off topic, but after reading this extremely interesting post I am puzzled why it was jerked from the TC Forum. I understand that there are other venues for this type of journey, but the OP was specifically dealing with truck campers and the issues that he faced and/or resolved. At any rate, I appreciate the post and plan to study the films and other materials that the OP so generously offered. Thanks for reposting it.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

I suggested to Steve that the Avions camp together at the Expo in Flagstaff. I hope that anyone with an Avion feels free to come to the event whether or not they're in the reserved area. As Sleepy said, this is turning out to be a huge event. I believe that the Great Whazoo will be part of our group among many others. So, Avions, I hope to see you there. Looking at you Ticki.

RE: Truck camper meet-up at Overland Expo, Flagstaff, May

We're still planning on getting there after a family gathering in West Texas. Hope we get everything done on the camper and nothing falls apart on the trip. Heh.

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

When I first checked out my original plastic tank I was real happy that it didn't leak and it didn't look cracked. After I put all the plumbing back together is when it started leaking. Once I removed it, I noticed hundreds of tiny cracks. I've been following this thread closely. This week we are buttoning up the 67. All of the systems - electrical, water, gas - have been checked out, and they appear to be working. At least in terms of a static test. But, this string sure has me nervous. Its been a few moons since we took out the tank and replumbed. Now, seeing other people's experience, it makes me nervous. I mean if you are contemplating a disaster, a disintegrating black water tank has to be right up there.

RE: Mattress and Insulation Upgrade

Hey Mike, great blog. We're finishing up the 67 Avion and are looking at options in mattresses for the cab over and bolsters for the fold out bed. Our sizes are a little awkward: the cabover is 42" x 84" for instance.I imagine that your comments are about an off the shelf mattress that is an easy replacement. Custom sizes with the modern foam materials may be very expensive, no?

RE: Avion camper rebuilds - dozens of photos

The shower pan cracked in my C-11 which has led to a bathroom restoration project. I've written about it over at Airforums. Here are some photos: Thanks for posting on this site. We welcome any information about Avions. However, I think it is best that you include your description with the photographs when you post. This thread is a sticky and will be around a long time for others to learn. Thanks. DG
